I am trying to get Hannibal to like me. Which way is better? Gifting him one tech at a time until he reaches pleased, or gifting him a whole bench at once?

After a while, Hannibal will forget. If you can, gift a bunch of tech during one turn, but one by one, carefully monitoring his status.

Tecibbar,

I've never done any hard testing to back this up, but I've noticed that civs tend to like me more when I gift them gold and techs on the initial meeting. I've noticed a lot of civs instantly give me the +4 Our Trade Have Been Fair if I gift them one tech upon meeting them. This decays over time, but it's nice to start with a handy +4 relations bonus. Of course, this gives me no time to find out who hates this new person, but if I ask them to talk about someone else I can find out whom they hate.

Gifting techs isn't a very good way to get someone to like you. You'll get the +4 from "our trade relations have been fair" but that's about it. if you gift a ton you might get a few points from "you have shared your technological discoveries with us" but that one is hard to get. You have to gift a ton of stuff for just +1, and it's very rare to get it much higher than that. Maybe +2 if you bring him from the classical era up to infantry or something.

If you want him to like you, you need to do multiple things. Adopt free market and make sure he's in it. Have the same religion as him. Trade resources to him (they don't have to be gifts, trading or selling works), have open borders, don't trade with his enemies, and vote for him if he's ever nominated for something.

Gifting additional resources is better than gifting techs. You don't really need that extra banana and the diplo bonus is much more valuable than a couple of gold.

QFT

This is good. You gain nothing from keeping double resources to yourself. Trading for resources and gold is good, but failing that, gifting the stuff still prevents some other AI from trading the same stuff to the recipient.
You get a trade bonus, and occasionally the "supplied us with resources"-bonus with the target, not some other civ.

I would gift resource, but they would take 20 turns to have an effect. I want to get him to please now to prevent him from attacking me.

I think I will rephrase my question. Does little gifts add up, or the diplo modifier only go up if one time bribe is big enough.

Is it because in the begining, tech value more?

Reread my post. i answered your question.

Troytheface is a troll who posts bad info to be a smartass.

Troytheface is bullshitting as usual. Heavens knows why he isn't baned.

Are you guys sure? I usually like to go with the whole "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity" line of thinking. However, if he has a history of repetitive behaviour, I think malice takes the cake.

My experience is that the UU does not remain special if you gift it. My only experience with this is during a cooperative game with my friend vs. the AI a couple years back, when I was playing India. I tried to gift my teammate Fast Workers, but they just became regular workers.

Back on topic:

In my experience, it is about the same to give them techs one at a time or all at once. Just how much you affect your relations will vary based on who the AI is and what your history with him/her is like.

Also, you should note that once the AI has decided to attack you, it is committed to doing so. I have been attacked by surprise before, and after reloading, boosted our relationship from Cautious to Friendly. They'll still attack on the same turn. Basically, the way I think it works is the AI sends their units to your border using an Auto-move (I know, for the AI it's all Auto, but whatever...), and they don't cancel the orders once they're given.

My point here is that if the AI has decided to attack you, you're not going to change their mind.

Well, by raising relations you could ask for a small tech gift, if they agree, which they usually do if you only ask for 1 gold, that'll buy you an extra 10 turns. And I'm not positive, but I think this 10 turn delay can sometimes make them cancel their war plans. if they don't attack at pleased and that's how high you got them.
