How is Military Strength Calculated?

Just curious. It's a metric that the AI uses a lot in determining peace deals (they seem to not care at all how the war is actually going), and it would be useful to know how best to buff my apparent army strength so that AIs will negotiate favorable peace terms with me. For the record, I play almost exclusively on Immortal, if that affects the answer to this question (though I suspect it is the same or a similar methodology across difficulties)
