after doddling through (everything automated, etc) and winning a couple chieftan games quite easily, i decided to try regent mode. I failed horribly at first, but then came here an read through a bunch of the war academy stuff and feel I am doing okay. I am still ranked fourth in histogram, but I am leading science and everyone is polite with me. i find i revert a lot to the autosaves after making a mistake (such as losing a city culturally) is this cheating to revert to saves when something goes wrong? i am learning a lot, but not sure if i am doing that well or not...anyhow, here is a link to my save:

http://home.earthlink.net/~sickmia/civ/

i think you have to right click on the file and do save as... after clicking on that link.

if any of you have a couple minutes for some general pointers, that'd be awesome! i'm planning on a diplomacy win i think.

oh, i forgot to mention that i play on a mac, not sure if that is relevent file-wise. i do have that latest patch (1.29f or whatever it was)

i just remembered this, too. i am purposefully playing strictly without the great wonders. i read the thing about "wonder addiction" and decided I would not build them until i start playing harder modes so that i don't use them as a crutch. i did build a small wonder (wall st). does that count as wonder addiction?

i just keep replying to my own thread. i see this attach file feature, so here is the SAV file (though you can also get it off my webspace link above)

this is my Rp. 0,002 (Indonesian Money :D )
1. I dont think u will have problem with Diplomatic Victory
2. Small wondors dont count.
3. Wonder addicted should be fine for regent level.
4. If I were u, I would search Sci. Method, and take the hoover dam (U should be able to do that with prebuild), and u will be much safer to get UN wonders (tech wise, u already fine)
5. I dont like searching dead end tech, such as communism, nationalism, or espionages (I better buy those).
6. For American Civ, I was expecting u got more land.
7. Try to increase your culture (especially in the border) But Im not worried about culture flipping. Your neighbours were lower. Just watch out, England may win via culture. U might try to get "culture bomb" town.
8. MM : seems OK to me, u are not in war, others gracious to u, so milking to get more point seems ok.
9. Trading, be careful, if one of AI got eliminate and you are still trading with them, u will get rep. hit. try to trade with gpt-resource/luxs deal, rather than gold-resource/luxs
After all, if u keep them gracious u will be ok.
That's my Rp. 0,002. better player may give better advice though (I just played one emperor, and going to 2 :D)

Edit:
1. I'm a wormager (spell?)The highest level I played by peaceful means was warlord.
2. Welcome :D

Welcome to CFC.

Re: reloading. reloading is one of those things that really polarizes people. There doesn't seem to be any happy middle ground, like do it when this happens etc. (with the exception of known bugs). I say, do it if it makes the game more enjoyable. I also think there is some room if you are doing it to learn from your mistakes on the earlier levels. Many players would say that living with your mistakes will make you a better player in the end, and they're probably right, but I feel that you need to have a good understanding of the game before you can improve. Once you can consistently win on Regent/Monarch though, I would say that then you are just exploiting the game and you should live with your decisions.

OTOH, no matter what your level is, NEVER reload a PBEM, SG, or other multiplayer game as that would certainly be considered cheating.

EDIT: No, small wonders don't count towards "wonder addiction". The reason is that all civs, given the right conditions, can and should build them, so you don't get a benefit that other civs can't/won't.

great, thanks for the tips guys. i am up to about 1800 and almost into the modern era. i feel that the tech pace has slowed a lot, largely because i'm about 2 steps ahead of the computer and unable to do much trading.

i chilled out on the reloading, and will definitely not do it after this game. i find i often forget to lower my science 1 turn before or forget to micromanage for an important turn, so i need to buckle down there. the lack of great wonders i think is really helping me manage myself effectively.

china is trying to take over the world and, along with england, conquerred neighboring japan. because i had so many strong cities right on the border, my borders expanded immensely when china or england conquerred the cities, to the point where the newly conquerred cities only have about 6 squares. this was a great way to get land and resources. also, right before they squashed japan (who was gracious with me), they asked for my help. i feel like a sell-out because i ended up conquering japan's last city. i'm hoping my culture swallows up the japanese cities that england and china captured.

i've noticed my rep took a major hit with germany since i took over the last japanese city. what might cause this? they were polite with me before and now have been annoyed with me despite a couple of mordidas. everyone else is still polite with me except china, who is gracious.

Did you have a MA vs. Japan with them? If you destroyed Japan with any turns left on the MA, then it counts as breaking a deal, because you did not stay at war for the full 20 turns. Crazy, I know, but also a known issue.

well, i won in 1850 diplomatic. quite easily. 1850 seems pretty late compared to when some people build UN, but oh well. my score was about 1350. pretty lousy, i think.

Not bad, afterall, any win is a good win. :)

1850 isn't too bad on Regent. The reason players can get the UN much earlier in other games is because of the faster tech pace at higher levels.

1350? Read one of the "do you finish your games" threads, and you'll see that 1350 is a good score when compared to all the games that are never finished.
