how long does it take to play a scenario and how long does it take to play...

On my prefered diffuculty,(As in deity.) you have to constantly restart so on normal speed about a 200 hour estimate. Also depends on your speed and diffuculty. :nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke: The way to happieness is ............... (censored.)

200 hours??? i know you want to make the game last long but DAMN. what about an 'average' game/scenario on settler? does the game time go longer as you raise the difficulty level? its not worth playing a long game if im going to continually loose.

As with many things in Civ, it depends. The difficulty level, the size of the map, the number of opponents, and especially the game speed (i.e. number of turns) all play a factor. On top of that there's your strategy and playing style. Generally, warmongering takes longer than a peaceful game because you have to micromanage all those units. Whipping also requires more micromanagement and can therefore take longer if you indulge in it substantially.

And everyone plays differently. I watch TMIT's YouTube tutorials/examples and his play speed makes me dizzy. He can play a complete game in a couple of hours. Me, I'm a plodder and a micromanager who likes to warmonger on large maps at marathon speed against a few extra opponents, so my games usually take 12-24 hours to complete. (That's even taking into consideration the fact that I almost always play an Advanced Start game to relieve the tedium the first 100-odd turns of Marathon would otherwise entail.)

I usually play Monarch / Small / Normal speed, and my games take anywhere from three to seven hours, generally depending on how much warmongering I do. Making the map bigger, and reducing the game speed, will of course make the game take much longer.

ah ok. yeah, i should make my maps smaller. whats a good setting to play for a civ beginner? i just don't see the value in playing a very long game when i really don't know what im doing. its not very fun in that way. i think short games at this moment will be better and more fun in this stage of learning.

I suggest starting with Small Pangaea and 5 AI civs. Pangaea means there's only one continent which you all start on, so discovering new civs is straightforward and so is waging war. It simplifies the game significantly.

That's a good suggestion. I myself learned to play the game using the default settings--standard sized continents map, 7 civs total (so 6 opponents). The continents map usually results in 2 continents and demonstrates the value of the Astronomy on many maps. That type of game usually 4 to 8 hours to complete, more if you warmonger a lot. The strange thing is, when I warmonger, although the game takes longer I usually don't notice it--I get too wrapped up in the game!

and quick speed.

I on normal size maps on emperor difficulty, my games typically take around 20 hours. Not all of that would be actual playing time though, because I sometimes leave the game running while I do other things.

Typical game times for me:

Less than 30 minutes for something like a Quecha rush
One or two hours for an One City Challenge or a Tiny Culture victory (quick HOF entries!)
4-6 hours for a Quick Small warmongering game
8-20 hours for Standard map size and Normal/Epic speed Dominations and such, the kind of games I play most
