in a custom Game?

I play on Prince and with 10 other Civs... I am always at the top 3 if not the top. My problem is usually later in the game I start to trail off... I mean really bad. Not sure what it is.. I go from say second rank all the way to mebbe 8th or 9th.

Usually this happens when I decide to Declare war on someone or they decide to declare war on me. Sometimes I I run out of steam just because... i shrug. Its around when im just finding Oil and use "Steam" technology ill get some nice nifty units but then the damn AI will always Steal from me and then use my technology to kick my butt :)

Usually I play from anywhere between five and nine opponents. I've noticed that the game seems to get harder the more opponents you add, and how close to each other they are. I believe this is because it allows massive tech trading to occur which pushes you back.

What kind of map do you normally play on? I find pangaea with a ton of civs is harder than something where the AI is less mobile, like archipelago or big+small.

I try to vary it. I used to play pretty much exclusively huge pangaea with 18 civs, but it gets a bit samey. I do prefer to have more civs rather than fewer, so I don't usually play with fewer than 6, but I try to vary the number as much as possible.

I let the RNG decide for me. And then I avoid looking at reports that let me know how many opponents there are.

It makes the early game a little more interesting. It's usually pretty easy to figure out if you're playing one of the larger maps or one of the smaller ones, but it's often difficult to figure out exactly what size. This also gives slightly added value to Stonehedge and Calendar, as they reveal the true size of the world.

Is that civ on the other side of the continent the only other opponent and I should just gear up for a conquest? Or is there one more continent someplace else, thus making the better move to befriend my neighbor for trade benefits.

I like to play Huge Fractal with anywhere between 15-18 civs. I occasionally go with only 12 though. The more civs on the map though, the more likely the early warfare is hard to come out of, which I like. By the time I actually start gaining an "edge" I am only in like 9th out of 18 places on monarch. I have been doing worse since BTS with the new espionage. I like the new system, just havent figured out a good method with it really.

I like tight squeezes, so I play 12-14 on standard maps with high sea levels, usually terra or fractal maps. If I can build four cities before 1 AD I'm lucky.

I generally play large map and I have the same problem. I'm at the bottom until about 2500BC and then I'm at the top until about 1500AD and I fall WAY WAY behind really fast. I can't conquer/expand fast enough, I outpace my economy which NEVER keeps up, no matter how early and aggressively I cottage.

that pretty much sums me up ^^

I Play on Huge map and with 6 continents which usually leaves 2 civs per continent.
Towards the End most people are annoyed or cautious towards me. I try to keep following the top dogs religion and government set up then trade and bribe the Lesser ones. This usually buys me some time.

Until tehy decide my army isnt that strong then one decides to crush me :)

I do the best if I have a religion and spread it aggressively. It puts me way behind in army for awhile. I had one game where I managed to get 4 religions in the same city and spread them all almost every where. My economy was ok but my infra was so far behind from building missionaries...
