ICBMs have never been used IRL, still many argue that they are useful ;)
I almost always build them when I can (can=got the techs and got the production to spare), but I rarely use em.

I've built them just because I've had space races and only about 4 or 5 cities can build spaceship parts. I think ICBMs really raise your power score so no one will invade. Other than that, I've launched on the turn before I'll win the race, just to see if they do much damage.

I used some once in a multiplayer game where a player was about to win a diplomatic victory (had enough people to get elected with his own vote), so I nuked several of how cities to see how it works. I knew this wouldn't be enough to reduce his population to prevent him from winning ... let's say it was more like "I know you're gonna win but I can bother you until the very last turn anyway"

OK ... "Chivalry" is not part of my vocabulary :D

I used it on the several Arab cities (has NOTHING to do with the current threats about the US nuking Iran even though the Arabs are in the game) in one game where I had already conquered the indians and was ready to conquer the last civ, so I used the nukes to weaken their cities and units.

I've used them just so I would know how to use them if I needed to. If the opponent has SDI (which the patch made more expensive to build) it can take 4-8 ICBM attacks to get one to get through the SDI.

I have built them a few times but never launched one in a game. The first time I got one I saved, nuked a city to see what it lookrd like then reinstalled.

why did you reinstall the game??? reinstalling doesn't change anything about how it works.

I have used them in two games.

The first to see what they looked like.

The second, to see how many I could make before they became outlawed because I had a good lead. I made 12. I was only able to get 4 to hit and they had little effect, since then I have never made any as I see actual combat units more worth the time spent.

If they are going to be so worthless they should be cheaper to make or just removed IMO. Or if they are going to be so expensive to make, they need to be more powerful.

I have only used them in chieftian games. Where I knew, I had a very large tech lead.

I targeted any Cities with resources to build ICBM. Another favorite is coastal city to limit their ship building.

He probably meant "reloaded".

Windows users tend to say "reinstall" whenever they have to do with any sort of computer problems

Whoops, I meant reloaded that game not reinstalled the game. Sorry for the poor explanation. I did not want to actually throw nukes in that particular game, I just wanted to see the big boom.

I just got through using them.

My spaceship was to be finished in just a few turns. Noone was nearly as powerful as me, and my soldiers were getting lazy. I couldn't have lazy soldiers on a trip to Alpha Centari. So I used my nukes (8 of them) on 2 Chineese cities and claimed them for my own.

That will teach Qui to cancel a deal with me!

I have only used them in one game to teach Japan and France not to mess with me.

I think the damage should be about 5 tiles in radius (10 in diameter) around the center and totally obliberate everything, cities, units, improvements, everything - turning it all into desert/ocean. The ICBM's themselves shouldn't be a unit so that if you attack, they can retaliate no matter how much you destroy of their land. So even totally obliberating them, they will still be able to retaliate. It should be done in such a way so that the game doesn't end until all nukes are fired so that the other civ gets that chance to retaliate in the next few turns.

I think that would cause a lot more tension with nukes...well only if the AI was programmed to deal with this properly.

I like to use nukes at every opportunity :) Last night I was in a multiplayer duel against a mate of mine & had to lay waste to his nation. In terms of power - if you launch say, 4 or 5 at a city, it'll be practically destroyed and have next to no defence. Normally I use them to render an enemy Civ useless prior to a big invasion. And they look cool. haha. Also, during multiplayer games it almost always leaves people laughing, even if they're the target. Fun Fun Fun
