I am thinking that i might download Bryce again and use it to create a little tutorial for city making. But because this means that i have to create a city, it is no small task, so i would like to know if anyone would use it. Keep in mind that making a city in Bryce is not that easy; my own ones have been in total around 600.000 polygons for the largest size, and individual buildings get up to 70.000 polygons. So if you are lazy you better forget it ;)

That said, i plan to provide some detailed instructions on how to create the indivudal buildings, and even make them availabe for download.

The tutorial would include these points:

1) isometric camera set-up

2) green terrain set up

3) building creation, including special shapes which can only be created using boolean operations

4) city terrain creation

5) lighting set-up

6) finally, when everything else is done, i will mention how you can finish the set using the Gimp and MS paint (i use MS paint for some parts of this, but you could just use the Gimp for everything if you prefer).

Are you sure that you want to make 4 sets (1 multi-era set)? This is a lot of work, which is why i never attempted it.
First, I'm certain I want to learn to make cities. You seem to be the city maker to learn from - I'm learning Bryce anyway for units & possibly some lm terrain. Secondly, since I have my hand in several scenario projects that are multi-era the answer is yes, eventually I will need several completely different sets of at least 2 eras.

One problem with multi-era sets is that you have to change the regular houses as well, which doubles the work. Which is also why i never bothered with making culture-specific houses for my sets, but kept a northern european looking house in all. Same deal with the walls.
Apart from that, if you are making them like i used to, you would need four special landmarks for each set.

Yes ! City-making tutorial and starting scenes are very needed ! It would help a lot to create new cities, especially such nice as yours. :)

Not a wonder tutorial, since i do not create wonders anymore, but a building tutorial, which i think is what you meant :)
Besides, the only thing different from a city making tutorial is that you need to know how to make the grass background for the building.

I mean, show how to make stuff in Bryce, then how to put in on grass and make civilopedia images. Splashes are easy to make; they wouldn't need a tutorial.

I doubt I personally would use this tutorial, but it would be nice to have it around, just in case I decide I do want to take a plunge into city making :)

Actual modelling in Bryce is relatively straightforward; I think the standard Bryce tutorial that comes with the program is sufficient. Most of the creative stuff comes from one's own trial and error. ;)

A tutorial for putting in the Bryce grass, setting the lighting, and making the Civlopedia images would be useful for those new to making content through Bryce. :)

Ogedei is right. Remember how my first 3d cities used to look, considerably worse than my latest ones. That was down to working with the program and becomming familiar with ways to create things :)

I would definitely use this. I love your cities Varwnos and would love to create similar city sets myself. I tried Bryce a while ago and found it very confusing, but I have been meaning to give it another go anyway and with a tutorial from you I would definitely try to get to grips with Bryce.

Just out of curiosity how long does it take you to make a single era city set?

Perhaps you could propose what things you would like to see in the tutorial

  1. Isometric camera set-up
  2. Green terrain set up
  3. Building creation, including special shapes which can only be created using boolean operations
  4. City terrain creation
  5. Lighting set-up
  6. Finishing the set using graphics manipulation programs such as GIMP or PSP
:coffee:

Oh yeah. Also applying textures or whatever to building surfaces.

It depends on what i start with. If i start from nothing then it takes a month. If i already have the generic houses then a couple of weeks, since i only have to create four buildings, and i am slow-moving :)
The thing to remember with cities is that all that matters is that the graphic looks good in that size. So don't bother with extra details which will not be seen. I only turn my best modelled buildings into actual building gfx.
