how many units should garrison in the city in order thet REF would not take it?

I usually only bother with 4 soldiers and a couple of cannons per endangered colony. All the others get none.

Really? Only four? The REF can take that, if it wants. I generally put 6-8 infantry in coastal cities, along with several canons, and 2 inf + 1 canon in all nearby coast squares. Make the REF pay for those landings!

I keep the coastal squares empty, with dragoon armies one square back. Keeps the REF honest that way.

I've not lost a town yet, even with only 4 soldiers.
