Usually for me a major upgrade (mobo/CPU/vid card etc) every 1.5-2 yrs.

Every few years. I should be due for a new computer in about a year and a half. (I have a P4 1.8 GHz)

I upgrade when I can afford it or when it's offered for free. I upgraded my Pentium II to a Pentium III I got for free earlier this year, and now i'm saving money for an Athlon64, MoBo with K8T800 chipset, RAM and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Might have enough money sometime next year, maybe not.

When I need to, my machine now is fairly high end so I shouldn't need to do any major upgrades for sometime. Also the amount of spare cash I have is an important factor.

Upgrading? What game is that?

if anyone has an obsolete 1 Ghz processor, PM me

(i'm not paying for anything but shipping mind you)

I update as soon as something comes out that significantly improves performance. My last 3 upgrades were radeon 9700 pro, nforce2 motherboard and Athlon xp 2600+ CPU.

When it becomes impossible to run anything with this thing.

Comraddict, how is the Nforce 2 onboard sound? I'm also running it, and it has massive problems. So much in fact I can't play games like Counter-strike, as the sound is distorted beyond annoyance. I sometimes get the same problem with CivIII, but I can normally restart the program and fix it. Do I just have a defective board?

Edit, oops, forgot the rest of the post. :)

I upgrade if there is a big deal at the store. I also upgrade if the stuff I'm running doesn't support the newest software.

But the above only happens when I can convince the rest of the family. ;)

I use audigy 2 instead. I must say it makes some huge noise from time to time. Noforce2 has been huge disappointment to me.
No you don't have fault board, visit nforcershq

Like others, I am too poor to upgrade before its absolutely necessary. In the intervening time, I save up some money towards the cost of the new machine. Its nice to be able to pay cash for a 'puter or, if you have to get a loan for it, plunk down a nice big down payment (~50%).
