In CiV it was just a button press to garrison, now the button is gone! If you fortify you don't get any of the garrison bonuses and if you stay on alert in the city, still nothing. I am getting angry as I am losing money, culture, happiness, and even cities as my units are providing no help.
A unit moved into a city automatically garrisons. It can also be told to sleep, sleep until healed, sleep until awoken by an enemy unit, wait, skip turn, etc., instead of the old (awful) system of garrisoning.
Garrison is an automatic function of a land unit in a city. There is no longer a button for it. The unit just has to be there for it to happen. You should be receiving the "garrison benefits". If not, it's a bug.

Holy c**p this forum is fast! Well, I've been trying to fortify them to no avail, so you guys are saying to unfortify my unit and just let him sit there? That seems counter intuitive...

Double check and if no bonus bug it in 2k bug forums. Be weird if you did not get the bonus, you would be the 1st person I heard of who does not. But it does happen!!
It does give a benefit, but you might not see it until the next turn if the unit has moved. Watch the strength of the city and you should see it go up.
Eagle's right. Just moving the unit in and out should show you the change. I just moved a catapult in and out of a city several times, and the strength went up and down accordingly.
However, there have been times in the past that I haven't noticed the change, so it's possible that there's a display update glitch.
This is a welcome change, but I wish there were still some way to make units in cities invisible. I like the look of my cities better when they're not obscured by giant elephants.
Yeah, I prefer the new system because now I can garrison archers, fire at enemies with them and still remain "garrisoned" instead of losing my happiness/culture if they did anything but sit there.
Yeah, I think that you don't see any change when you hit Fortify, because you're already getting the bonus because the unit is in the city. This screwed me up for a few days too.
