How to build a Great Wall

I've been worried about building the Great Wall - build it too early, it doen't protect much. Too late, it doesn't stop the barbs that are pillaging your outlying improvements (but does double the GG points you get for killing them). Or worse, the AI builds it first.

Solution? Almost build (pre build) the great wall. Then interrupt to build something else - barracks, granary, axemen, settler, worker, Oracle. Every time you finish building something, ask yourself - Do I want the great wall yet? If not, build something else.

Eventually, you will decide to complete the Great Wall and cover the most territory, unless you misjudge, in which case it's your own fault.

I find the Barbs come after I build the Oracle. So prebuild the Great Wall, then the Oracle, then finish the Great Wall. And may the barbs choke on it!

Now if I could figure out how to swap build queues, so I don't have to wait for the previous one to get finished.

Anyone?

Queu swapping has been removed from Civ4, as it was abused too much in Civ3 ?

does production decay over time like research?

for units it starts decaying after 10 turns and decays at 98%
for Buildings it starts decaying after 50 turns and decays at 99%

(I'm not sure if that applies to Wonders, and I've never heard of it applying to research)

I'm also not sure if it is affected by game speed.

pg 66 - 67 in the manual. it doesn't really give any details, just says to return quickly after changing techs, as "your people will start to forget what they have learned as time passes."

i'm pretty surprised at how long it takes for production to decay. i've been hesitant to leave anything in the queue for over 10 turns on marathon.

Great Wall? Is this in Civ 4?

Great Wall? Is this in Civ 4?

It will be on July 23.

I do the ctrl+click all the time early in the game. I'll start the barracks, switch to worker or settler, then resume barracks when the worker or settler is complete.

i think that building the great wall after the first cultural expansion. i mean, it then protects all the squares that are needed to work, anything outside, like a stray gold or copper mine, should be protected in the case of incoming barbs or rivaling nation
