How to combat corruption/waste

Whenever I build/conquer a city on the other half of the planet, it's about useless to me because it's plagued by extreme levels of corruption and waste. Building a courthouse doesn't help a bit and the forbidden palace takes way too long to build (due to waste)...

Communism doesn't work either. The civilopedia might say that all cities suffer the same limitted effects of corruption with it, but when I change to it the corruption is still rediculously high.

Rush buying can solve the waste problems, but what's the gain in supporting a city that produces neither commerce nor shields? If there is any way to limit the effect of corruption to acceptable levels, I'd like to know!

You can go in the editor and increase the optimal # of cities. This will help corruption, but not sure if this will even save a city that is on the other side of the world. Those cities are usually only good to serve as a military base or to collect resources/luxuries. In those cities it's usually best to just have them build wealth (after rushing a airport or harbor, so your empire has access to any resources it has) and make the citizens specialists, all of these are immune to corruption, even if it is only 1 gold or 1 beaker....

Forbidden Palace is possible if you have a leader to rush it, but really only useful if your going to, or have several other cities around it and it will be another major part of your empire.

Okey then, thanks for the tips. Seems like I'm gonna have to find a leader then.

But what about communism?

The problem with communism is that it spreads the corruption evenly throughtout all your cities (Even your Capital!) So if most of your cities are already near you capital, don't do it! If you only have a few cities near your capital and several other cities scattered all over the globe, then communism might be better off. But if the cities by your capital is already fully developed and making real good money/production I would just use the cash from them to rush buy an airport in that far city, and with the airport you can send units right there in just one turn from another city that has an airport.

One advantage of rushing improvements in faraway cities with good growth is u can at least cover the costs with tax collectors. The extra pop/culture/territory helps your score if not your production.

Another approach is to make the citizens of those cities ridiculously happy. A city that goes into "We Love The King Day" has less corruption and waste, so building all the happiness improvements, or increasing your luxury rate, can help. Just keep them as blissful as possible.

PS I've never thought to check, but I suspect that Courthouses etc. would become much more effective in WLKD as well.

WLTK day only reduces waste, not corruption. Luxury rates are based on whatever uncorrupted gold that city is producing. Same goes for money improvements for money going to treasury, and libraries for beakers. So a city with only 1 uncorrupted gold would only put 1 gold towards happiness (1 citizen happy). So in order to have any happiness from the entertainment expense you would have to have it set 50% or higher. Your core cities will be spending way too much money on entertainment they don't need, just to get 1 happy person in a far away city (not worth it).

And if you have way too many cities and/or the city is too far away, nothing can save it. On a huge map, I had a city only 25 squares from the capital. City size of 22, it had courthouse, police station, marketplace (with all 8 luxuries), temple, bank, factory, WLTK day, etc. It produced only 2 uncorrupted gold and 2 good shields. The problem was that I had 200+ cities (6 times the optimal # of cities)

True. Courthouse is just as effective in reducing waste as WLTK, but a courthouse also reduces corruption. I did a study on corruption. Courthouse, police station both had the same effect in reducing corruption and waste. WLTK day was just as effective in reducing waste, but no improvement for corruption.

Quoting from the manual:

"An ongoing We Love the King Day lowers the levels of corruption and waste, makes the city less likely to defect, and significantly increases the chance of failure if your enemies attempt to initiate propaganda there."

Of course there is the possibilty that the manual is wrong, it wouldn't be the first time that's been the case. I've never actually checked it myself.

The manual has 100's of errors in it (especially for unit values and civ attributes). Look at the civlopedia and see what that says about WLTK day. I had also done a test and found that waste is the only thing that is helped during WLTK day. Look at my Corruption study in the strategy articles.
