How to deal with war weariness

An explanation how it works would be nice too. But I get the impression it just gets bad over time regardless. Although I feel like if a war is going well, it shouldn't be that bad. Yes I did lose 2 units, but I destroyed over 10 units, most within my territory.

The problem is the Aztecs don't like to make peace. I finally got it after giving him some marble. Which is ridiculous since I was winning the war. But whatever.

At this point I was at -6 amenities in my capital for a total of 1 out of 7. I'm not sure at which point people start rebelling, so far I've managed to avoid rebellions. But I was closer than I like. It seemed to jump up at some point, I'm not sure when. Most of the war I was only 1 amenity down, but suddenly it jumped to -6.

Other than the policy which reduced war weariness by 25% (this policy came too late for me anyways), how do I combat this? If the Aztecs hadn't accepted peace I would have been in a bad situation. I feel like the game still has the problem of past civ games where you are forced to conquer cities to force peace. I would have done so, but my military just wasn't large enough to take his capital which was closest. Yeah I forward settled him, so part of the blame goes on me. Regardless, I'd like to learn how to manage war weariness better.

I haven't found a way to combat it yet. Even with zoos up everywhere and overlapping, and a major abundance of luxuries, I still flirt on the side of rebellion. I usually just have to time my conquest and peace before my people start to rebel. By the time weariness has worn off, my army has healed up, gotten replacements, and moved into position to attack my next target.

Luxury resources combat it (obviously) but also spam entertainment complexes in every single city you have as well as all the buildings for that district.
Also i´m not 100% sure but i think there´s one more policy coming that will remove all or near all war weariness?

Try building all the wonders that give amenities as well. these things made my Gorgo game break even on cities where it was the worst, got rebel-spawns and everything until i did this.

Try to have a Casus Belli, it'll reduce the rate that you get war weariness.

I've cleared my continent and then conquered the other and never ran into an issue. Just conquer cities and the new luxury items will help keep you going. That and build zoos and stadiums.

I would like to know what causes the war weariness. My neighbor civ just declared war on me 3 turns ago and I've been fighting a defensive war in my own territory. Suddenly one of my cities (just one) popped up to -4 war weariness. I have no idea why. You would think that your citizens would want to fight to protect their homeland. Doesn't make any sense to me.

So I just cycled the turn (to 4 turns after the war started) and not a single one of my units died during the ensuing combat. Sure enough, that same city increased from -4 to -5 war weariness. So it must not have to do with units killed. Just strange.

Nope. The city is away from combat. And now another city away from combat just increased to -4 weariness. The only common denominator is that both cities once belonged to another civ that I conquered long ago.

War weariness works like this:
warmonger points(base 16 + era points(8-16-24-32)
* 1 for combat in allied lands
* 2 for combat in foreign lands
* 3 for killed unit
War weariness is applied to both parties in combat, attacker and defender, so it always goes up.

One example: i attack and kill a unit in neutral territory(foreign lands for the calculation) so my war weariness is base 16 + era points 32=48 * 2 = 96
the defender's war weariness is base 16+era points 32=48 *2(combat in foreign lands=96)48 *3(killed unit=144)=240

Players lose 1 amenity every 400 war weariness points.
Amenity loss occurs to your city with the highest population up to -11 and then second highest pop etc

War weariness in not very well implemented, while the player can handle it, with more luxury resources and dealing with the occasional uprising, the AI seems buggered. I have seen AIs midgame with 13000 war weariness points, that means minus 32!!! amenities, so basically crippled, with lower growth and production and with constant uprisings pillaging the improvements.

For the most part, I accept that a lot of my cities will be at -ammenities when going to war, and that I'll have time to fix it later when I make peace, and I'm fine with that, it makes sense. It's not too crippling, there are ways around it so long as you aren't bankrupt at the same time.

I see; thanks for the info. Is there a file to edit those values? I think I would zero the combat in allied lands and reduce to 1 both the others.

Good info, thanks.

Another problem I'm running into is with the inland sea map the resources are clustered together. There doesn't seem to be diversity of resources on my map. I'm playing as France, and I'm no where near wine for the achievement. I seem to have multiple copies of the same luxury. And everyone seems to dislike me this game for whatever reason (I haven't started a single war since I'm going for the cultural win). This civs in this game a bunch of haters. It's hard to get trades going for other luxuries, but I'll make more effort if the Aztec attacks me again.

Quick Question: how do you find out the AI's war weariness?

I don't think you can know exactly what it is, but considering the amount of units they throw away to attack you on higher difficulties in war, it's gotta be pretty high, pretty fast.

Documents/mygames/civ6/logs/player_warweariness.csv
While playing alt+tab out of the game and open it with excel, the last entry down the list is the latest, the human player is 0, opening it again after each combat or after a turn you'll figure it out

Does anyone know if Propaganda and Martial Law stack. Both policies give 25% reduction in war weariness. Just wondering if they stack.
