I tried to extract it into a folder in the Mods folder, and named it 'Dawn'. But it didn't work. What's the trick to get it to work?

Hi,
Do you find a mod named 'Dawn' when going into 'load a mod', if it is the case it work but if you want the proper name you should do as merjin_v1 tell you.
If it isn't that in this case you should check that your 'Dawn' folder contains directly the mod content and not another folder with the mod in it.
By that i mean your Dawn folder should contain the folders 'Asset','Map', etc if you find instead a folder 'RFC Dawn of Civlization' or 'Dawn of Civilization' you'll need to move the content of the folder into 'Dawn' or the folder into 'Mods'.

This works with 'Load a Mod' now, thanks. It seems to take a long time to open though, and there is an icon that the installation made for direct opening but it doesn't work.

The first time you load a mod can indeed take some time. But every time after that it will be faster.
