I just had the Mayan's send a GP to my holy city and convert it. I purchased and inquisitor and it removed my religion and not the Mayan's religion.

Missionaries and Inquisitors are created using the majority religion of the city they are purchased in

i.e. you need to purchase it from a city following *your* religion

or else use a great prophet of your own

your religion will come back eventually after some turns, but why wait when you can freaking go back 2 turns in autosave and buy inquisitor in your holy city.

Pacalllllll!

You know, That guy sure has been my neighbor an awful lot since getting G&K (every time he's a player). He always converts my holy city too.

Yes, you have to buy your Inquisitor or Missionary from a city that wasnt converted. But keep in mind it's not necessarily urgent to switch. Your converted cities are going to have his follower belief, read up on it in the religion overview to see what it is.

In my first case, I was only losing 1smiley from it so I overreacted. On the other hand, when he converted a c-s that I happened to be conquering, he nerfed my Just War bonus!!!

I hate being that guy, but really...there's a billion other threads on this already. :p

Any religious unit purchased in a city will represent the majority religion currently in that town. If your city gets flipped by a neighbor, you need to buy your inquisitor/great prophet in a city which still worships your god(s).

Also, if you have a neighbor who enjoys sending missionaries and great prophets into your territory, park an inquisitor in your holy city. You cannot convert a city if an inquisitor is in it.

That's right. Had it happen to me last game (king difficulty). took a lot of turns that i was unable to spread my religion crazyness. But after a while my religion came back, also I helped a bit by killing the Pharao who was about to do it again to my other major cities. You can sit through it. Depending if you need the boni desperately. In my game I had picked 15% border growth as found bonus and played on small islands, it did not hurt much too live without for a while as I bough the relevant fish resources instead.

When I finally learned that a Inquisitor parked in our outside your city will hamper any conversions I made it a routine practice to safeguard my core cities when I saw missionaries/GP floating around . . .

It seems that once you park an Inquisitor the AI won't even come within site of the city w/ the GP.

Anyone else notice missionaries/GP captured by a CS floating around for the rest of the game?

Another tactic is to encompass the enemy GP with you units, inly possible if you can spare some, I did it where some mountains would make some sides impassable and then just waited until we went to war the next time.

Pacal did this to me, too. He seems to prioritize coverting Holy Cities.

It was a smart move. Since I had just enhanced my religion, I didn't have to faith to countermand his spamming of Great Prophets.

What he obviously hadn't considered was that I was England, had a very large navy, his capital was coastal, and he ROYALLY PISSED ME OFF. Needless to say, Pical no longer exists in that game. hahaha

What can you do if you're playing an OCC and don't have any other cities to use? I founded a religion and then had my city converted and now can't do anything with religion. Is it a case where you need to make a point of putting an Inquisitor in your city before it gets converted or is there something that can be done to get it back afterwards?

petey: I believe that any Great Prophet spawned before the Industrial Era will ALWAYS spawn with a religion you found, rather than a religion of your city.

I say this because I spawned an 'extra' GP in a game (think I was Ethiopia) after Enhancing my religion, and it was right after my neighbor Persia founded his. About 10 turns later, Persia's religion was gone.

After a while, his 30 Pressure from his capital converted 1 or 2 followers, but not enough to be the dominant religion. He then spawned a Great Prophet and reconverted all of his cities.

So, yes, it can be done.

Correct and this is also true of Post Industrial ones you Buy.

Cool. I was wondering about that. Also, as long as there arent a bunch of the same opposing religion cities within range of your holy city, it will exert pressure on its own citizens and eventually it will convert back, although then the punk will beeline back and convert it back unless you have an inquisitor of your religion ready. What is funny is your inquisitors can wipe out your pantheon belief followers  I wonder if the cities actually lose the benefit though. I will have to test that.

But I can't buy anything with my religion anymore. I'm still accumulating faith points and it says I have enough to buy a Great Prophet and a couple of others, but the option to purchase anything with Faith is gone.

I did buy an Inquisitor soon after the AI changed me and told him to remove competing religions. Might that have gotten me one who was of the new religion and he then got rid of my original religion?

Conditions for destroy religion.
1. No major presence in any cities
2. Use an inquisitor in the holy city.

I destroy religions by taking their holy city, bringing my inquisitor and wiping their religion completely from their city that I own. Maybe the same can be done if you own the holy city and you used their inquisitor? I never lose my capital (well then I just lose) and that's the only place I buy/use anything from. So I don't have experience with your scenario.

Ya, I'm just trying to figure out what happened. I have about 1200 Faith and the Religion screen tells me all these things that I can do with it, but I don't have the option to do any of them and all of the units and buildings that the City Screen used to say that I could buy are now gone.

It sucks because I have a couple of CS's who are asking me to spread my religion to them in exchange for goodies, but I have no ability to do anything about it.
