How to mass up your territory

As I became a more experienced Civ 3 player, I came up with a strategy to quickly become a world power. All it involves is a simple rule: If the population grows 4 or more, build a settler.
Another way to keep your production of wealth and transpotation good is when your population becomes 3 or more, you build a worker. Once the worker is built, you press Ctrl+N. This builds a road or railroad network connecting all your continental cities. The only downside of this strategy is that if you already have a network of roads connecting all you continental cities, you must manually build the railroad network, wich is sometimes a pain. But once you have an internal road network, you should make external road ways to your rivals so you can trade with them, provide them military assistance, or even invade them.
Another shortcut is Ctrl+I. This is only for workers. This makes them Improve the sorrounding city squares and the first thing they do is build roads.

Some refinements may be required and even desirable in some games. The map size and settings may suggest alterations to this formula.

One that comes to mind is the settler at size 4. It is not uncommon for a town to be able to make a settler with no real loss of size. IOW at size 4, if you pop out a settler, you drop to size 2, unless you are about to grow.

If you were at size 6 and had the correct number of shields and excess food, you could pop out a settler and be dropping back to size 6.

It can be useful to let those early towns get larger than size 7. You may be able to dedicate a town or 2 to making settlers at some set rate (4-6 or even 7 turns). The same for workers, just at a faster clip, if needed.

Semi-automated workers or fully automated is not good enough for me, especially early in the game. This is even more the case for players that like wide spacing as they will have a lot of dead tiles for a long time. Those auto workers will be working on tiles that will not be used by any citizen.

Almost all, if not all, experienced players who either can play at high levels (demi-god or above), can compete for HoF spots, or can compete earn a high spot in an XOTM competition would NOT regard this as good advice.

@Chamnix: Search the term "Settler Factory" on this forum, and you will find a lot of good material on building settlers quickly. Especially read Bamspeedy's "Babylon Diety Settlers" article, in the War Academy. I also find it helpful to read some of the Training Day Games on the Succession Game Forum, since they frequently discuss step-by-step how to create a Settler Factory and how to keep it going.

I have a very, very strong feeling Chamnix has read those articles. You might also want to check his name in the HoF, and the HoF threads. On top of this, and more to the point, the quote he referenced talked about building a settler in a city and it growing from size 6 and dropping back down to size 6. In the epic game, if you have a city with say 5 more food need in the box at size 6 and 10 more shields for a settler and it gets 5 food and 10 shields on that turn, you'll get a settler and your city will drop to size 5 (as it grew to size 7 inconspicuously). But, how does a city produce a settler and go from size 6 to size 6???

My apologies, Chamnix. I think I assumed that he question was posed by the Original Poster.
