How to play as Byzantines?

I'm playing Civ IV v. 1.61 for Mac and I don't have the Warlords expansion (it being unavailable here in Nepal).

My main thing is that I really want to play as the Byzantine Empire, and I've heard that it's possible to do so in the 1000AD scenario, even without any mods, but all my attempts so far have failed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm basically a total newbie, will PC version mods run on my Mac?

The Byzantines were added as a civ in the Beyond The Sword expansion. Unfortunately, that is not being produced in a version for the Mac. However, I believe there is a way for you to convert it over to where you can play it on the Mac if you can get hold of a copy - check the Mac forum. Good luck.
