How To Win an easy Cultural Victory... through Religion!

You know that place by the other place...
I know, I know, it seems ludicrous but yup there is actually a pretty easy way to do this and it works every level I've tried up to Immortal. So, obviously you need to get a Religion first... I'm not saying you have to get the first one because actually the options you'll need never seem to be taken by the AI, even if you're the last Religion.

Once you have said Religion (Pastafarianism, in my case... all hail his Noodliness!), you'll need to get the Reliquaries option which will give Relics TRIPLE yield of both Faith and most importantly Tourism! Yup, I think they overdid this one. You'll also want the Lay Ministry to give each of your Holy Sites and Theatre Square districts additional faith and culture. Usually I also select the Gurdwara (for added city growth and faith) and Missionary Zeal so that your Apostles can quickly get to wherever they're going... in this case, their glorious deaths!!

It is also best to save a spot (a marsh or flood plain) for Mont St Michel, since this gives you another couple Relic slots and, MOST importantly, it gives you the Martyr ability for all your future Apostles.

So, once you have done all that, you start spamming cities and Religious districts with Temples. Lastly, you start sending out your Apostles to be sacrificed to God. I usually just send them in the direction of whichever Religion spammer is closest, like India, Brazil or Arabia... bunch of Jebus freaks. Remember to use up all their Religion spreads before you martyr them... to maximize their usage.

If you have 5-6 cities like this (or more) and you choose the Heritage Tourism selection in your Economic Policy, you should be able to get a 1000 Tourism and be off to an easy Cultural victory... don't forget your Theatre districts too.

Cheers!

Cool! Thanks. Its the Sacred Sites strategy updated for Civ 6. I'll try it next game.

Great artist/writers/musicians are so bad and uninteresting... the number of slot for great works is just far too small.

Why couldn't they make some of these culture focused Great People work like Engineers, Scientists and Merchants?

You don't need to create 3 different types of GP just to get some stuff to put on the culture district IF you have the slot for it.

Actually i found out that selling arts is really nice to make quick money. Some civilizations are paying quite a lot for it. I know than in a culture game it is probably counter productive to boost another civilization, but you can sell to the less threatening one and beside you can steal back the art later on ;)

The biggest problem I have with the Artists is, that you are need different artists for the artist museum theming bonus. And in most cases, the AI will have the other GW, but if you want to trade with them, there is no information what those great works are. So you have to look in the great people window under already purchased ones and then look for the fitting ones and then trade hopefully with the AI.

It would be just way easier if there would be a mouse over pop up with the needed information in the diplomatic menu when you are trading with the AI ...

And yeah, running out of gw space is a general problem: 1 Great Writer for 2 Theatre Districts, 1 Great Artist for 1 Theatre District with Art Museum, 1 Great Musician for 2 Theatre Districts.
So, to max out, you will have 4 to 6 theatre districts, considering that you are building other districts too, so additional ones in younger city will take a long time to construct. So you will just need 3 GW, 3-6 GA (only 3 if you will build archaeology museums) and 3 GM. But over the course of the game, you will probably end up with more great peoples ...

... and there is no theming bonus for great writers or musicians, so every additional one is just useless, if you dont sell your great works ...

Thanks for posting this it seems like a pretty nice strategy. Just unless you are allies with yerevan or get the wonder it seems to unreliable. I have not really paid attention to where it comes in the tech tree or if the AI likes to build it, what is the build conditions for the wonder?
It seems japan is not too bad for this strategy (culture vic through religion) with their double discount districts (+ extra adjacency). Others may be better but love japan :D

As I mentioned, you need to save a space on either flood plains or a marsh for the wonder. The AI doesn't seem to go for this one so even on the higher levels you should be able to get it as long as you have a spot for it.

cheers

Mont St. Michel also gives the martyr ability to those apostles already in the field on the turn it is built.

One update to this. If you don't want to send your apostles all over the place or if that option is taken, you should choose the one that makes sure your cities don't drop their religion after losing a religious battle (sorry, can't remember the name of it and I'm too lazy right now to look it up)... this way you don't have to travel your apostles, you can just sacrifice them to whatever marauding Jebus freaks come your way without having to worry about your own religion being lessened in the process.

Cheers,

AQ

I just did this on Immortal with France.
Yeah you really need Monastic Isolation. Like you say Amtrak, it is better to martyr your apostles when the other civs invade with theirs. Sending your apostles out to search can be frustrating when you don't find any or they all appear in your own territory. Dying in your own territory can kill your religion very quickly without Monastic Isolation.

Still didn't get a very good score only got 521 with a rank of Nero!

For some reason my apostles stopped producing relics when they died. Does anyone know why? I still had relic spaces left. Maybe it is an unlisted result of the Enlightenment civic? Someone beat me to Cristo Redentor. Probably should beeline that next time too.

Finally, although Cathedrals seem like a good idea - they are a trap! Artists only produce religious art in the early periods of the game. Civs like Russia that get a lot of early artists points will beat you unless you put a lot of resources in at the expense of other important early game build priorities (like military).

Still a good strategy! Thanks!

Actually,
I think there is finite amount of great works and relics available?
Once the limit is reached you have to trade for them?
Was quite expensive to trade for them. Cost me about 100gp a turn.

Yeah, high scores seem very difficult to get. I still haven't gotten anything higher than that nerf herder Neville Chamberlain.

:p

On religion and tourism, is there a boost to tourism when you share a religion with a civ like in 5?

Nah, I wouldn't want to waste a precious religion slot with Monastic Isolation. A good strat is to save the first apostle you recruit that has a Debater promotion and have him hang around. Kill anything that crosses the border and heal him up at your holy sites (You may need 2 debaters depending on how much faith the offending civ is generating. Japan was pushing out 250 fpt with Earth Goddess by turn 70 in one of my games so I needed multiple). A second strat would be Inquisitors after allowing one of your cities be converted. Inquisitors rock and nobody expects them.

True. One small point though, there was no Earth Goddess when this thread was written.

How was this thread even on the front forum page?? Sorry, didn't mean to reply to a 2 year old thread...
