So...how's it going? Anyone have anything worth saying about their current game? I've got to take this opportunity to bash the terrain -IT SUCKS!

I agree the terrain sucks!!!
I have never had so many Engineers using so much time at changing Mountains and Hills into plains and grasslands!!!
And one more thing, the island that you start on is probably the worst possible!!!
I really like the Persian island, it's nice and beautiful.
But any way, there isn't much to tell about my game, except that never before have I paid the barbarians so much money - after playing this game I have had this image in my head of my smiling Diplomat/Spy walking up to the evil looking barbarian leader and just as they are about to kill him, he asks them: "Do you prefer Visa or a check??"

I really feel like I paid them enough for a huge house in Monaco!!!

It's going terrible. I tried to implement Smash' deity strategy (i.e. using the money early in the game to speed things up), but still it's very slow game early on! And those opponents are realy agressive (though I actually can't blame them as I keep asking them tibutes for my patience).
I think everyone will score relatively low on this one, but that's what makes it a challenge, right?

It's not going well.
1650 AD. I'm in 4th. I just got Horseback riding in a trade in an alliance. I think I had 13% last time I checked. I have 6 or 7 cities. I have Great Library, Great Wall, and Leos. My cities are mostly on mountians and hills so a bonus for defence. I actuall expanded VERY early but the English crushed New Rome before I could defend it. It really set me back. A few bad huts also hampered my early expansion....but I will prevail!!!

well, finished in 1850...had a malfunctioning SOL so i didn't even get out of monarchy to communism till like 1760. It was cake after that. 76 cities...

UGHH! The starting postition sucks my sweaty nutsack. Had to restart after Zulus conquered my outer colonies. I'm not going to give them tribute, and that's final.

After stagnating for about a millenium or so, I think I'm starting to gain some momentum again. It's 1000AD, I've got Library, Leo, Wall, and Chapel with I think 14 cities. Trade/science/growth rate stinks on this terrain, so Library is the only thing keeping me in business.

Kaak's comment about the Statue scares me because that is my next goal right now. If I either don't get it or have the problems kaak had, I will have much trouble supporting my strategy.

I'm not going to set any records with this game, I just want to survive.

No doubt. I had enough trouble trying to establish myself and vanquish the Zulus, now I'm having happiness problems because I missed a few wonders!

I'm starting to feel less inadequate. At least everyone else feels the same way I do about this god-awful terrain...
In my best attempt(I've "IronManned" my way through SIX attempts) I got Library, Colossus-Copernicus-Newton, Leo's, and a couple others, but after a certain point, the neighbors just came on over and handed me my *** on a platter. You just can't win. I went Pentacostal with the mountain redoubts, nothing helps. You just can't keep the bastards at bay AND have a decent Science rate. You can't win unless you do both. You can't do both. You can't win.

Hmmm...Some of us won =)

The GOTM wasn't suppose to be easy....

Well, it must be close to the Armageddon. Lord, you know that I won’t fly by that lesson you taught me, to pull out my Wesson you brought me, and i’m not stressin’ it softly. Get ‘em up off me, ‘cause all we wanted harmony, been bombin’ ‘em. Yell up outta my ghetto, “I won’t settle,” get on my level.

Easy? I'd settle for playable. If I started a new game and it generated that map, I'd quit in disgust in about twenty turns, when I realised how screwed I was.

That's the fun of this GOTM. Everybody is in the same boat, so it doesn't matter, that you start cracky.

And I'll keep up some stats about how every GOTM went, by giving the average performance, so you can compare and see differences. When the average score is low, the GOTM was harder...

I thought the GOTM was a "no cheat" game and I took that to mean "no reloads". So I'm assuming that you only sent in your first attempt, right?, and that the other ones are for your own satisifaction.

When you replay a game, isn't that the same as peeking at the map? I did poorly on my first attempt but now I know exactly where the science city should be. Naturally, I'm doing better this time but, by the guidelines, I'm not submitting my replay.
