I used to be a big fan of huge games but since following the All Leader Challange on this forum I decided to try a standard map game and I loved it.

The thing I'm finding hard about going back to Huge is that it seems to take ages to settle land. I find that with the vast tracts of land it simply ends up a Barbfest since you're limited in expanding into the FoW due to the maintainance or simple production speed. Is there anyway to fight against this and experience a more cohesive game? Or is it simply why more people seem to play Standard then Huge?

The Great Wall becomes almost mandatory in my opinion, though I don't play huge maps. You don't need to fogbust, don't need defenders from barbs, just scouting units, and escort units. I would get the first worker out, then probably build the Great Wall while growing. Your empire will expand faster in the long run. And who doesn't love a great spy?

Huge maps have, as a default, more opponents so theoretically the space should be filled up in the same time as a standard map. At least thats my understanding of it. I never play huge maps anyway due to my laggy comp

The default number of opponents is 7 on standard, 9 on large, and 11 on huge map. Size of the map scales way faster, so larger maps are sparse.

On large maps, I always add a extra AI player to ensure that civs don't start too spread out.

By the way, I've noticed that if the civs are spread out too much, the AI seems to tech MUCH slower (like, construction at 1000AD on Prince), since the increased barbarian activity causes them to build far too many units.

I always add 2 extra AI players on large when I play. I had way too many isolated starts when I went with the default number.

I found the same thing ans also switched to standard maps.

I'll try to add a few more AI's above the default then to try and get a good game going.
