I posted this in the suggestions section but didn't get any responses so....
I don't know if this has been suggested already or if it is even possible but i think you should allow the human player to become a vassal state under certain circumstances, for example with the european trading companies when you are about to be invaded by a european nation there should be an option to become a colony of the nation rather than face an invasion, this would allow the player to experience the historical events of becoming a colony and later declaring independence. So when playing nations like Indonesia, the Congo or India you would have the opportunity to experience the historical colonization and also benefit from European protection and technology. Eventually you could create an event that would allow you to declare your independence at the historical date, like the 1940s for India and Indonesia or 1960s for Congo, or you could declare independence the usual way which i think is by refusing tribute? Also when playing as the Aztec or Inca instead of being invaded you could choose to capitulate to the nation such as Spain, not that withstanding invasion is all that difficult but i think it would be interesting and more historical to experience time as a european colony, and also allow the other nation's religion to spread in your cities.
Also if you are going to add American civs like Brazil, Canada and Argentina than they could spawn earlier as vassal states of their mother nations. Being from Canada i think it would be interesting being able to start out around the same time as the USA, but as a colony of Britain, and then get the option to declare independence (which we did peacefully) in 1867 or around there.
Anyways i think this would add a whole other aspect of the game to the human player as being able to become a colony and declare independence later on which would be more interesting and historical than fighting off a giant stack of European invaders, unless you prefer that.
