Disclaimer: yes, it's that time of the year again, the time where the dutch win everything that matters (unfortunately, the things that really matter happen in may and july, when the football finals usually are...):

Hurray for the new world champions ice skating sprints, Erben Wennemars and Marianne Timmer!

For Timmer, it was like old times in Nagano, where she won two Olympic gold medals as well. Unfortunately, she doesn't look that pretty anymore, but that's OT. What did that bearded american do to her? After some very bad years, it's clear that she's back at the top.

For Wennemars, it was revenge on the track of Nagano, where that stupid norwegian kamikazed him out of the olympic tournament... Now, all he needs to do to gain immortality is winning the Elfstedentocht!

Hurray for Wennemars!

It was a thrilling tourney. I will probably be short of sleep for the rest of the week :( .

Most annoying thing: When trying to stay awake until 9 in the morning, it is rather irritating you need to watch the women's tourney in between.

Even worse: when going to sleep at 9:30 in the morning, it sucks when your mother arrives at 13:00 to bring a birthday present.
Note that my birthday is in may...........

Anyway: It was worth it. Wennemars did a great job!

I also like the view of a Dutch flag, above 2 Canadian ones ;) .

Grunde Njøs? Yes, only thing Norwegian skating can be proud of since Koss ;)

Seriously, hooray for the champions, although I doubt Wennemars'll win the Elfstedentocht...

Not a chance in hell... He only said that to put his performance in perspective...

I can't help noticing that Stapel isn't referring to Timmer in his post... ;)

Watching women's skating is just as ridiculous as watching track&field, 100 meters sprint for white men only :p .

I disagree, obviously. ;)

Why then?

I mean: when watching topsport, you want to watch topsport. Dividing the population in 2 (or more) groups that are differently talented by nature doesn't make sense, does it?

If I would stay up late, to watch the Vietnam men's speedskating championship (whose toptimes will probably the same as the toptimes of international women's), I would be regarded lunatic, wouldn't I?

Do I hear voices that want to start a women only GOTM ;) ?

Women only GotM is different. It'll be like women's only chess (well, ok, so there is - there goes my point)

Sadly, I could not find any Vietnamese results - but in 2000, Nyamdondovyn Ganbold won the Mongolian championship with the fantastic overall score (small allround) of 179.778 - 17 points worse than Anni Friesinger at the ECh this year. I'd say Vietnam would be even worse.

I can see your point though - it'd be like watching sports for over 35s...

I know this is your 'stokpaardje' Stapel. :) But I still disagree, if everybody felt like you all women should just stop competing because they would never be able to compete in the important tourneys.

Women want to excel just as much as men do, and actually do too. I admire Anni Friesinger and Marianne Timmer. :) They deserve the platform they get. Women tourneys can be as entertaining as mens tourneys are. And besides: we don't stop sprinting because horses or cars can go faster do we?

edit: ... and if you don't want to, just don't watch. Just go do something else.

No!!!!!
They shouldn't stop! Ofcourse not. I also do not want to stop the 6th divison in football. It just shouldn't be broascasted. At least not right between two parts of the men's tourney. Now I am forced to watch it! That is the problem. It simply isn't topsport, thus I do not want to watch it. It annoys the hell out of me.
I do understand women do the same training effort, put aside the same stuff to reach the top and go as deep as men go. But their results are simply not as good. IT is just like watching a skating tourney for men lacking talent.

Excuse me? Women do NOT excel just as much as men do. It is factual nonsense.
That is the whole point! They do not........

As told above, I am forced to watch.....

You think it's nosense, I don't. You keep talking about talent that they would be lacking and you know it's not the talent, but just the strength. Like I said: a horse can run faster than a man, but do we stop racing 100m? No. We have atlethics as well as horse races. All sports are comparative, we make classes and devisions all the time.

Who ties you to the screen, then eh? Am I supposed to feel sorry for you? Well... I don't. You watch the 'so-called-lesser-gods' too, all the men that won't finish in the top ten. Again don't expect pity from me. :)

Just the strength.... You don't actually really believe that, do you?
-Come one Space, that is feminist crap! Men not only have more strength, also more talent (ever wondered why men are better in darts?). It has been scientificallly proven! Apart from that, you need both to be perfect anyway to reach the top.
-Horses can't skate ;)
-I am not telling women, or men lacking talent, to stop. But, just as I don't like to watch the Gelderland 2nd division skating championship, I do not like to watch the women's skating championship.

You know what I mean. Watching TV at night form 4 to 9 is a tough job. Knowing it could be 3 hours shorter doesn't make it better.
If possible I do not watch the lesser gods, btw.

Running out of arguments? Darters don't skate either, women do.

No, men generally have more takent for skating. Their technique is better. It is just a biological thing. Can't help it either ;) .

Well, actually... women's physiology is more fit for skating than men's. Having a tendency for x-legs (or knees I don't know the correct English phrase) helps. :p

It is about timing, when and where to hit the ice....
