Nobody knows whether that is really going to happen. We do not understand the Gulf Stream well enough to say how it will be affected. Last thing I heard is that it is unlikely to completely vanish. Besides, after the climate has changes enough, Labrador-like might not be so bad.

In fact, the current models suggest that on a broad scale, there will be likely no place actually being cooler than it is right now. Global warming is still an apt description, it just neglects the other changes to climate that will follow.

You've obviously never been to Labrador.

Alright! I've always wanted a hurricane named after April's nerdy friend from Ninja Turtles.

Will the heavy rain caused by Irma be linked to flooding

Hurricane Irma is a liberal conspiracy to convince people of the made up 'global warming'

The size of this storm is incredible, 325,000 km^2 (160,000 mi^2). It would cover the entire nation of Spain. There is a real possibility that it hits both coasts of Florida all the way from Miami to Jacksonville.

That's not even a good parody.

    Unfortunately, it's not a parody.

CNN just showed a graphic in which Irma stays a Cat 5 as it parallels the northern coast of the Greater Antilles; then it will turn right and skim the east coast of Florida at Cat 4, dropping to Cat 3 when it reaches Georgia.

Good news everybody Hurricane Jose is now a Cat 1 and its projected to come illegally and take american jobs ! (projected to strengthen into Cat 2 probably Cat 3. landfall is possible onto the east coast of the US)

Why do they name hurricanes anyway? Maybe I'm wrong but other weather phenomena don't get names.

Jose is tracking Irma. It will get into the Virgin Islands on Saturday, but then begin turning right. It will pass north of the Bahamas and then either take aim at the mid-Atlantic states or will continue turning right and miss everything.

The pioneering Australian weatherman Clement Wragge began assigning names to tropical cyclones in the late 19th century, initially using the letters of the Greek alphabet and characters from Greek and Roman mythology. An eccentric and playful fellow, he later turned to the names of local politicians he particularly disliked; as a result, he was able to state in public forecasts that the officials were “causing great distress” or “wandering aimlessly about the Pacific.” Needless to say, Wragge’s subtly hostile approach didn’t take the meteorology profession by storm.

During World War II, U.S. Air Force and Navy meteorologists plotting storms over the Pacific needed a better way to denote hurricanes while analyzing weather maps. Many began paying tribute to their wives and girlfriends back home by naming tropical cyclones after them. In 1945 the newly formed National Weather Bureau—later the National Weather Service—introduced a system based on the military phonetic alphabet, but by 1953 the options had been exhausted. The next year, the bureau embraced forecasters’ informal practice of giving hurricanes women’s names. Because America led the world in weather tracking technology at the time, many other countries adopted the new nomenclature.

    TIL, very interesting, thanks

Turns out that hurricane gender equality was finally implemented in 1978 as well

Awwwww Was hoping it would hit into Georgia (or any other red state)
It is now turning northward so likely not to make any US landfall

Hurricane Katia is now Cat 1 so there is still hope

Hurricanes should only ever be named after women.
    Spoiler :
Because they are wet and wild when they arrive, but they leave with your house and car.
