I do think that I am missing something here. Maybe someone can help me. I really wanted this game to work out.

BTW I didn't pirate the game.

I think I may be missing something. This post sounds different from your starting post. Are you sick of the game as in bored and frustrated with they call late game tedium? Or are you having a difficult time learning "how" to progress/succeed in the game?

If latter, maybe you could check out the strategy forums etc. Or post specific questions that will enable the veterans to help you.

PS. DO NOT include the Prima (TM) strategy guide with your offer. It will lower the price you can get from the sale.:D

About ancient units beating the new ones, 1st, it's damn rare. Sure, sometimes it happens and I get mad, but since my tank killed 15 musketeers before losing, it's still realistic. Besides, I like it more than the firepower system: just amog us, the only way to beat Civ 1 and 2 is playing isolationist and researching like mad. But it limits the game. What if I wanna sail the world kicking butts from turn 0? Now it's possible :) . IF the new units ALWAYS beat the old ones, then the only way to win is by having modern armor, battleships and stealth bombers. Doesn't it sound odd? I mean, the Soviets lost to the "puny" Afhgans, and the Americans couldn't get the Vietcong's asses no matter what tech they had. The Zulus used IMPI to defend against cavalry and cannons ad they lost, but after a bitter fight. Imagine the Brit commander whinning, "sob, why my gunpowder units can't beat a spearman?" It'd be just ridiculous. There are many factors as terrain, morale, proximity of food sources, local unrest, ambushes... I mean, why don't you try to invade Somalia right now? Their puny infantry will send you crying for momma quickly.

It's not impossible to play the peaceful way now, but you need to trade a lot and keep up to date. A powerful military always helps. Like present day Russia. Nothing great to offer, but no one is mad to mess with them. The AI, though not perfect, is way better than before. Leaving your cities undefended while researching all the way to space flight: gimme me a break, what a pile of BS. Never having to trade: BS. AI never mass attacking you: BS.
See? What newbies want is the return of all the bull. Duck it.

Sure the game is hard. But once you exploit the AI, it turns to too easy. Sooner than you can imagine.

There are options, with and without the editor, to set up this game to play most any way you want. I have played every variety of CIv -- except CTP, didnt like that -- since the first month it was published 12 years ago.
I was pretty frustrted with this one at first, then read the strategy section in this forun, through through the issues, and went back to work.
I never did play previous edition at Deity -- to much work. I fould a level where I could win and still have a challenge. My first win here was chieftain, and so easy it became boring early.
If you like developing civ, and no war ( like my son, eg) then set it for 1 or 2 civs, and do the space race. Or culture race. If they have enough room, they will leave you alone. Unless, of course you live too close to them:) Then you might have to eliminate them, or just move to another continent.

I am frustrated with this game mostly because of the BUGS, there are countless bugs in this game. Also the game is the most unstable I've ever encountered, it tries to write to my registry and I get blue screens. The patch is worthless. My puter bogging down taking 5 minutes or more between turns is ridiculous. It should be obvious to all, this game didn't get enuff beta testing and most of the tech problems happens to systems with AMD chips. At higher levels the AI cheats against you! My favorite example was an AI city that I was reducing to rubble with my artillery was still percolating away under WLTK day while I reduced population and destroyed improvements. If firaxis can straighten this stuff out, and much more, they will admittedly have a fine game eventually. BUt in the meantime. we are all in effect beta-testers. This game was rushed into production, and is an insult to all of us who paid good money for it.
