Hello, some time lurker here, not great player.
Just wanted to say thanks, posting good, enjoyable playthroughs videos is always appreciated.
I picked up many things from you, thanks! I also noticed a few things that I tend to do differently, so I wanted to have your feedback (after watching the first 2 installments):
- You moved 2 tiles to settle initially. I usually settle in place, but maybe I shouldn't be trusting the system with putting me in a good spot..
- You said you didn't except to wage a lot of wars before samurai, yet you went Authority. Would Progress have made sense as well? In the end, you were involved in wars quite early so Authority worded out fine I guess.
- When Authority, I hesitate whether to clear barb camps or let them live to get the XP from killing spawning barbs. Is that an option or should you always clear?
- I would have assumed God protection was a natural choice for warring Japan (barracks and walls are on your tech route anyway).
- You said you don't bully much. Why? I

First be warned I haven't play in a few months so I am going to have lots of mistakes in this series

- I think what you gain from moving at the start can be worth it if the reward is big enough, I just make a gut reaction
- You could be right it may of been better to have progress. I just figured authority would be slightly useful at the start and important mid game
- I think the exp gain runs out fairly quickly from barbs so I usually max out from killing barbs anyway. Maybe I need to do this more though, feels kind of unethical but I guess all is fair in love and war
- I should of read through all the options off camera then talked through my decision on, but I just made a quick decision mainly because I was recording, it can change your play a lot. In future I will pick more carefully. Mind when I steal a holy city that god of war will start being useful.
- It always strikes me as a bad deal, city states give you so much each turn, to throw that away for a small amount of gold seems bad, but I under use city states a lot, so I wouldn't follow my example on that. Do you bully much, how do you find it?

Thanks!
- as for religion, related question: as a early game warring civ, should I aim to found or not? If not, should I simply forgo shrines once I got my pantheon, and wait for when I conquer my first Holy City?
- as for tributing. PROS: it's easy, you can do it right away, with the new system you can bully from far away, it feels like you don't use Authority at its full potential if you don't tribute, you can combine it with declaring war to City states to get the XP from killing their units. CONS : you lose on nice yields from City States. Answer: we should do the math and figure which is best.

I don't usually pick authority, I roleplay a bit, so I don't like bullying the city states as I want to be the good guy (who burns half of the world in a just defensive war later, haha!). But I think you can ally some CSes and tribute the others, no? You cannot ally all CSes anyway, so it makes sense to pick several which you are able to sustain as allies and bully the rest.

Thanks!

Have to say you have convinced me with tributing, I will try it out in future.

My religion play is woeful, I tend to half heartily go for a religion, which is probably the worse way to do it. Better to pick a course and go all out. When I am a war monger and don't have a religion I defo go for a holy city early if it is feasible. This series I got a bit lucky in that Assyria had a religion that worked well with my war mongering.

Regarding part 7 around 14:50 - you don't get in trouble with the AIs for refusing trade deals. :)

If you ever have any diplomacy-related questions, you can always ask in the dedicated thread: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/diplomacy-ai-development.655040/

And regarding around 24:00, Artistry is not better than Fealty or Statecraft because it's higher up - there are three tiers: Tradition/Progress/Authority, Fealty/Statecraft/Artistry, and Industry/Imperialism/Rationalism. Each policy in a tier is meant to be more or less balanced against the others, although which one is best depends on your individual situation. Each higher tier, however, is better than lower tiers. Similarly, ideological tenets are generally superior to Social Policies.
