Folks,

Miracles do happen! I've actually gotten my 11-year-old son into C3C! The Shogun Conquest sparked his interest, so I set his game up on easy mode and coached him a bit. He's now hooked....

As a parent, it's nice to see a kid who's a PS2 and Gameboy addict actually play a game where he has to use his brain, not hand-eye-coordination.

What's really funny is when he asked me for the C3C walkthrough. You should have seen his face when I told them there wasn't any!

ahem, and I was hoping the news was that Firaxis has announced the first patch for tomorrow........ (wanders off in disgust)

edit: thread title was 'Awesome news' back when I worte this

My 10 year old daughter plays and so does my 8 year old daughter. They started off on PTW. They play on along on the easiest level, but I'm not sure if they really get the whole concept. They just built stuff and fight a little bit.

I'm just hoping they will pick on a few things in the game so they can relate when they start learnig about history in school. I want to get them exposed, to the wonders of the world and the different civs through out history, etc.

I really like that they added the Incas, and Mayas to the game. My 10 year old just did a unit on them and the early colonial explorers in in school.

Hey what happened to that "Open mind" in your sig ? ;)

it is (also) about giving people a second chance.......... Firaxis blew several.....

He's does OK. He goes at the game like he would an aggressive PS2 game. He builds everything, trades with no one, and fights a lot. Pretty funny watching the game from a kid's point of view. Very different.

He did say that the game was strangley addicting! I guess I'll be fighting for computer time. :)

From my own experiences with my little brother, the thing we all lack at this age is long-term strategy and planification... setting goals and objectives, that kind of things.
I remember my first games of CIV1, I always stayed in despotism because I didn't know what to do to prevent unhapinness

I'm reluctant to try and get my wife to play. Then when would I get to play? just being the selfish C3C addict that I am.

I got my son addicted too LOL At first we sat together playing "hotseat" and he would watch everything I did very carefully...amazing how fast they learn. He does a great job now, on his own. And would rather play on his own, I guess he doesn't like to wait for me to finish my turn LOL
I'm amazed at how well he can handle his "country" but he does a great job, his friends are like budweiser's in that they just want to go kill something for the money, or build something just because they can....but my son keeps telling them to "wait, we'll get there...one war at a time" LOL I guess he did learn more than I thought in history if he's quoting Lincoln :)

I started playing when I was 8 with Civ 2. And I have been hooked ever since, except for a couple of painful computer crashes that prevented me from playing.

If Wal-Mart is alway lowering prices, why isn't anything free yet?

Prices are simply falling exponentially ...

On topic: You'll rue your move when you'll have to buy a new computer! A Civ addiction is not to be taken lightly!

My dear hubby is a system's admin, and therefore we have tons of computer parts laying around from things "work" was going to "trash"...so since he started this job he's built 3 other computers out of "bits and pieces"...so I have a computer, he has a computer and we have 2 (very basic) computers for the kids (oh and we have 2 for the kids 'cuz there's 5 kids....1 computer would be hell...they'd be fighting over it constantly LOL) So no worries here on having to "share" my computer :) :) :)

Don't worry, C3C is a good religion.

Its not a religion, its an addictive substance :p

I came home from work yesterday and found my son playing C3C (go figure!). He asked me to check out his civ and how he was doing. This is what I found....

He had 6 cities going full tilt - one was up to size 19!

Then I checked on his army.....

He had over 100 units waiting in the cities!!! He said he had nothing else to build and was 'gearing up' for an attack on his rivals! Yikes! Once I showed him how to move the units in stacks, all hell broke loose and he is now conquering Japan...

I'm a proud CIV pappa...
