THANK YOU!!
Competition over, we made 20th!

Heyoooo!

A year ago I entered a remix competition at like *the* place on the internet for official major label remix competitions, asked for your guys's help, and I won runner up. Basically you all helped me get voted high enough to be in the pool that the judges would actually look at, and they pulled me into their top choices. It was a big deal, and again, thank you!

Now I am doing a much bigger contest, with 10 times the competition, 10 times the prize, and 1,000 times the mad producer credit if I win (aka I could actually break into the industry if I do... I know people who have blown up over less)

Goodish news: voting no longer requires you sign up for their site, so it's a lot easier. It now goes through facebook which is a mixed bag but convenient and easy. Prevents a large chunk of cheating which is good.

So far a bunch of people, strangers and a acquaintances, have told me it is better than the original. These are people who even like pop music and therefore like the original.

Anyway, it would be amazing to have your help. Thank you. Here's the link the vote bar is just to the right.

But give it a listen first! :D

Thanks Birdjag!

I don't think I ever heard the original, but I like this.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Haha give it a few weeks and the original is all you'll hear on the radio.

Thanks!! :)

Since posting this, I've managed to get a bit of momentum! I'm still at least dozens of votes back though. Around place 25 it's not one vote a jump so it's a bit of a climb, but we're getting there!

I tried to vote when I saw this link in the chat's topic, but it expects you to have a facebook account. Is there any way past that requirement that I am not seeing?

Thanks for trying! Yeah, only facebook.

I genuinely like the remix.

No facebook though. :(

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

I'm at like 35th place of 1,500 now.

The next 15-20 spots are for sure 1 vote movements, so every vote makes a fat difference!

I honestly don't even know what you did to it without hearing the original song :p But you've got my vote, good luck man.

How do these remix competitions work?

Do they provide you with the raw music files, with all the channels separated? Or do you have to do all that work yourself?

The former. Sort of. They provide the final mixed, aggregated music channels. All 3 bass instruments were on one channel, all the drums (including the kick and snare!) were on one, all the lead vocals were on another (it's a harmonized multi layered take) with pre-existing reverb.

It speeds up the process, being at that mid level of "stems" but it's pretty annoying at the same time, because I'm not in control of a lot of the balance.

On my version we dropped the original basses, synths, drums. We drastically changed the guitar from a surf rock plug to a distorted and fun riff. We sampled the original kick and snares, but barely used the snares and completely altered and reprogramed the kick. We did some edits to the vocals like stereo spreading the verses, band passing the key lines of the chorus, etc. We also chopped the vocals a few times, and in fact one of the key percussion sounds that pulses high pitched throughout is actually the stoplosives of her lead vocals. We also use an edited version of the "whoa oh oh" with a stutter as kind of a synth hook/pad throughout the song.

We re-colored the sound via EQ and reverb, and changed the mood. We also slowed it down by about 0.97% or so.

In our earlier versions we had made an entire sampled synth, tuned and everything, to her "whoa oh oh" vocals. It didn't make it in. We had almost cut the first verse too, because it sucks. But the song was too rushed so we put it back in. Stereo spreading it and putting the guitars there made all the difference.

I can talk about the process for dayz. Lots of premium off-brand Oreos were consumed that night. And caffeine.

THANKS EVERYONE!

We hit 20th. I really appreciate your support. We barely made 20. While not the top 10, it's symbolic and we're very grateful.

You deserve it, buddy :)
