I hate Anime and Japanese cartoon culture in general

They certainly are beautiful pictures. It's interesting how the standard for beauty is really different, the woman is a bit plump with very small breasts.
No need for painful diets to be be beautiful... good times, isn't it? :)

What about a Leda and the swan, or Danae and Zeus' golden rain, or Persiphae with the bull?
Western pre-Christian myth has plenty of kinky stuff too... and painting of them are often considered art and not pornography. :)

I was lucky in my introduction to anime. I was handed a cache of the stuff - a dozen series, maybe - and all of them were at least as good as the average TV show. A few were far, far better than the average show.

They're usually at least a little weird, which I love.
And many have a really odd, even unique, premise. Very refreshing compared to American TV. Some pan out really well, others... I'm amazed even Japanese TV allows them on.

But, unfortunately, that initial batch wasn't representative of the whole. So, much like other posters, I'll say that some anime is awesome and a lot of it is absolutely horrible.

At this point I'll usually try a sample episode or three of at least half a dozen shows before finding a series I'll watch. And that's after quite selective with the shows I try.

Like all other media... But with higher-highs than most, and lower-lows.

there I have some hooott HENTAIS but also many hentaiporns I dont like also is there
You see?

Not in Iran dood, wimmens are dressed appropriately or they're raped by men's eyes!111!

I have a question:

Why do so many people in the West, even (especially?) lots of "left-leaning", anti-racist, progressive people think it is totally okay with statements that are more or less racist towards Japan and Japanese people?

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but these blanket "a bunch of you are being rasist but I'm not going to specify any posts or specific remarks" accusations are not useful at all. If you have a problem with someone's response, say so - to that person. Specify the remarks you find objectionable. You will get far better responses if you don't make these vague generalizations - look how many times you've said things like "some people in this thread" or "a few of the responses here" etc. That's so vague as to be pointless, and only serves to confuse the discussion because nobody knows exactly what you're referring to or what was objectionable about those posts - because you avoid specifying them.

(My distaste for anime is not based on Japan, its culture, history, or people - I actually quite enjoy learning about Japan and am fascinated by the history of the country... but that has nothing to do with the obsession with anime among American teenagers. Like, at all.)

...with a few exceptions. What do you think of it? Am I the only one?

Okay, that’s fine, but why would you announce it a propos nothing?

I don’t like bananas, but you don’t see me making a thread about that.

An anime fanatic got annoyed when I kept calling it japanimation.

I would too, cause that makes you sound like a dumbass (only I'd ignore you rather than get into an argument). Why not say "Japanese animation" if you have some strange problem with using the shorter and easier term anime? Japanimation sounds like something an idiotic journalist came up with, and your insistence on saying it may well be taken to be intended to annoy.

because calling them japs ain't exactly cricket, wicket. kind of like calling a hispanic a spic i think. i dunno i might just be ignorant.

How to tell a Jap...

If I ever had a time machine, I would buy half a dozen manga and send it to Franklin D Roosevelt just to troll him.

I actually wonder what the people who suffered at the hands of the Japanese in WWII think about their grandkids who are obsessed with their vague ideals of Japanese culture.

Anyhow, I think anime is just as good as any other medium of fiction - it has lots of crap, a few good ones, and very rarely a brilliant masterpiece. I've watched a couple of series I thought were awesome, and then there were the rest that weren't so awesome. I feel that one thing the people who really hate it for no reason and those who really love it blindly share in common is that they sort of don't try to understand it from an Asian or Japanese cultural point of view, where things might be different than, say, in the American perspective.

Still, though, I don't get the obsession some people here have about Japan. Personally, I find their history extremely boring and their culture not that interesting as other East Asian cultures. Some of the anime-obsessed people also don't seem to realize that most Japanese people care about anime as much as most Americans care about Hollywood, since most Japanese people also do normal stuff like go to work or hang out with their friends or take naps - which makes me wonder, is there a small dedicated fanatical community of Hollywood fans in Japan who misuse American terms and cultural concepts in their over-idealization of a foreign culture?

Yeah, they're called Yankees, but they aren't really Hollywood fans.

My views on anime are about the same as my views on all other entertainment: mostly garbage.

Also, from what I understand, most of the creepy stuff isn't so much "Japanese culture" as it is "otaku crap". I doubt the average Japanese person is very fond of the guys who fervently watch cartoons about little girls and sleep with body pillows that look like said little girls.

Not exactly the same but South Korea banned all Japanese cultural imports, including anime and manga, until 1998.

My mom and dad watch lots of Japanese anime, although I'm not sure obsession is the right word, more like admiration; I look at the weirder stuff, as I have elaborated earlier.

Now, replying to cybrxkhan: My family has pretty much every reason to hate the Japanese, as my grandparents lived under Japanese occupation in Shanghai during the war. My maternal grandfather still hates the Japanese; not too sure about my other grandparents, but they probably sympathize with him at the very least. I think my parents like Japanese culture, but my mom doesn't really like for her own parents to know about that.
