is there any way to start a war between to rivals without the use of a full blown alliance? thanx in advance.

About the only way possible that I can think of requires you to be in a war for a short time. Let's say you want India and Japan to fight each other, with India being your neighbor. Place defensive units all along your border. Sign a MPP with Japan about 15 turns before the war. When you have about 5 turns left on the MPP, declare war on India, but don't attack! When India attacks you on your soil, the MPP kicks in, so Japan declares war on India. After 5 turns, you can cancel the MPP with Japan and (hopefully) sign a peace treaty with India. India and Japan will still stay at war for awhile.

Yet another problem with Civ III.

In Civ 2 we could pay off a civ to go to war with a rival. This is very historical - the British did it all the time in the Napoleonic Wars, Austria in 1809 against France for instance.

But we can't do it in Civ III.

I agree... and the ways to help an ally in a foreign war aren't good enough either... for example, look at all the help the US gave the Brits at the beginning of WWII... Also, i wish there was someway espionage could lead to a rival declaring war on another rival...

How about this (wish list):
what if you could assign any civ flag to a privateer. (Pirate ships always flew assorted flags in order to get close to their pray.) Then you could go around starting trouble and it would be blamed on that civ. Just remember . . . what goes around comes around.;) ES

that is SO what i would do!!! or: think about it... you try and get a civ to sign an MPP (to pull them into aforementioned war)... they refuse for a reasonable bargain... you send a fleet of privateers over, take out a few galleys or caravels... and instantly, they are begging you to be their ally.

Yea but that would be one more week and that is too hard for the programers. Aww poor programers:lol: not come on you lazy bums I know it is tough but hey you got us to buy the game so you hired guys who can make a good trailer and pay people to say your game is good. opps I sound like Zouave. forgive the rant
They just missed a few things mabye they will be good boys and give us a patch or just try and make us buy an expansion pack so they can get more money (which I don't have:mad: )

How about this (REAL wish list):
with the vast range of talent I've seen on just these civ sites alone, we should start a new thread . . . and then some sub-threads . . . and put together our own damn game. Then we could form a corporation, sell the game, start our own web site and sit out on the beach in Maui laughing at all the ranting e-mails we get. ;) ES

And this wasn't aimed at you, cegman. What you said made a lot of sense. It just made me think of how much effort, by truly talented and dedicated people, has gone into modifying and improving this game just for the love of the game itself. All we really need are a couple of real honest to god programmers (and I'm sure there are a couple of them lurking about) who can slap it all together and PRESTO, another success story is born. Think about it; the whole crew we need is right here . . . and there . . . a truly international collaboration of wit and wisdom, talent and thoughtful insight . . . just waiting to be tapped in to. All these mods could be turned into various expansion packs; THE WWII PACK; THE STAR WARS PACK; THE WIZARD OF OZ PACK for god's sake!!!!

Must be time for my medication;) ES

Reminds me of Strifeshadow. A couple of well-known, talented, starcraft players got together to create a game, taking the best features from other RTS', while cutting out those that players were dissatisfied with. Unfortunatly the game did poorly, mostly due to crummy graphics, at the time where everybody was reinventing the RTS genre in which everything was becoming completely 3D. Coming from such a small company, i believe they had quite a bit of trouble with marketing too. I read somewhere it cost like $60.00 just to ship it to Canada, not even including the cost of the game.

I'm not going to pretend i know anything about putting out a game, but i believe thats what the story went like. :)

Okay.
What if we made it available as a download off the Internet.
(Big file, or files, sure . . . but I've seen CAD programs of 500megs+ offered as downloads.) ;) ES

I'm sorry Bamspeedy, this has nothing to do with your question; but it is keeping your thread up until you get some more descent answers. ;) ES
