Hello. I'm not a new player to Civ in general, but at first time I ask a question that is troubling me. It is about the attack/defense statistics of eatch unit. For example what does 3/2 mean? I know that it is 3 attack and 2 defence but me question comes here. If a unit 3/2 (a/d) attacks a unit 2/1, in grassland for example, who will win? Is there a difference that if the 2/1 unit attacks 3/2? I'm not sure that I have understood this for good, so if anyone knows, plz help me to realise it. I know it is a silly question, but it is a question that needs to be answered to me.
Thanx a lot!

Death surrounds us all...

For a swordman (3/2) attacking a warrior (1/1). The attacker has a 3/(3+1) chance of doing damage each round. If he loses the combat round then he takes damage. That is before modifiers are applied. So if the defender has a defense bonus of 50%, the formula becomes 3/(3+1.5).

In symbolic terms:
let A represent the attackers attack value
D represent the defenders defense value
m represent the sum total of all the defense modifiers
% represent the prob that the attacker will win the round and do damage instead of the defender

then %=A/(A+mD)

combat is based on a random number roll, so the improbable will happen a certain amount of time.

So, let me get this clear. In this situation, where a 3/2 swordsman attacks a 1/1 warrior in grassland, it only matters the 3 attack power of swordsman and the 1 defence of warrior? Not the 2 defence of swordsman and the 1 offence of the warrior?
Thanx again!

Correct, the 3 attack of the Swordsman goes versus the 1 defense of the Warrior.

Another example. The 4 attack of the Knight(4/3/2) goes against the 2 defense of the Swordsman(3/2/1) if the Knight attacks. If the Swordsman attacks then the 3 of the Swordsman goes versus the 3 of the Knight.
