When FOUR barbarian archers showed up!

I don't think I've ever lost that quickly before, and I don't think I ever seen that many barb archers before. This wasn't a raging barbs game (and even for that, this is a bit excessive this early). I presume it must have been an event. Anyone seen anything like this before?

I've had that happen to me once... in a Noble game.

I started a new empire as Shaka on Prince level. After establishing my second city, I was surrounded by Barbarian cities. I built a good army, but dam, wave after wave of attacks kept hitting me. My improvements kept being destroyed.

It was only when I launched a counter attack and took the southern Barbarian city that they weakened. I was previously getting 5 Barbarian units, mostly Warriors and Archers attacking my city every 3 turns. Pretty good way to build a strong army, they get good XP from it.

Then Saladin wiped out my awesome army :(

Yeah it's an event. Don't remember it's name tough. Something like Varydian uprising or something...

Vedic Aryans. A ridiculous event. Should've called them the "Game Over Horde".

Can be funny when they're unleashed on an AI, however... ;)

Vedic Aryan barbarian uprising, #1 cry about imbalanced random events and also the #1 reason people turn them off. It can happen from turn 21 onwards if someone knows Archery (= always on Monarch+) and someone knows Polytheism.

Well, there should be an easy way to check if it was an event - by checking the event log. ;) But it definitely looks like an event, though.

I echo the opinions that the event is ridiculous and game-breaking if it happens to you. In all-human multiplayer games it's particularly bad, because the event is guaranteed to occur to a human player... effectively removing a person from the game just by a roll of the RNG.

This is definitely one event that should have been WAY better balanced and playtested before entering the game. ;)

Unless the event happens to a Civ you haven't met yet (it doesn't need to "happen" to the player they are going to wreck). You could always check it in the endgame replay though.

It definitely need more turn before coming up, yes. For now, I alway have happen on me when it's just harmless. "Oh, my 12 vulture are next to 4 archer ? Yum yum free XP !"

4 barb archers very early on is the Vedic Aryan event on standard maps (huge maps will hand you 6). IMO, this is the single most broken event in the game (among many others).

Not too long ago, I got sick of events entirely and literally added the event triggers XML to my custom assets with everything set to "0" so that I don't have them even in forum games or anything outside of MP or events-on forced XOTM.

If you dislike all events, you can do what I did. If you simply wish to remove events you don't agree with, it's a simple switch of its trigger chance to 0 in the XML, so that event can't happen. It's up to you.

Hmm, sounds like a good idea. Where in the XML do I go to do this? Bear in mind I'm relatively dumb with this stuff. ;)

A little bad luck; cyclone wipes out a pasture, forest fire, mine disaster, is okay. A little good luck; parrots, prairie dogs, black pearls, is also okay. Too much of either one, particularly when it can affect the outcome of the game is not okay with me. The event triggers in my custom assets has been edited to preclude both the Vedic Aryans and the Tower Shields events among others.

I copied TMIT's idea a while back, disabling every event. Since it can take a while to change it, here's a rar of the XML I use.

Even if it doesn't happen to you, it's completely unbalancing. I've seen them take 2 civs out of the game, since as soon as they destroy one they'll march on to the next until they themselves are destroyed. It is possible though to remove just that event from the game, along with the other barb uprisings. You don't need to shut off events altogether.

I had that happen to TWO Civs in one game, was pretty funny to me. Not funny when it happened to ME several games later. That event is pretty much "Game Over" for who ever it happens to.

Yep in a game I played last week, I could not help but laugh when I sent a caravel and reached a new land mass, one of the first cities I encountered was a barbarian city named "Madrid"... The obviously barbarian event saved everyone from alot of headaches.

It may be unbalancing, but I have to admit I find it slightly amusing/entertaining when it happens to the AI on occasion. It'd be stupid if it happened in every game, but every now and then it's funny.

Of course, it would be better if the event had never been put into the game at all, at least not in the form it is now.

Looks like you have a very good chance of avoiding death by starting on turn one, making your citizen work the hammer tile, building warriors, and fortifying them in the capital.

However, you have to know in advance that the event is going to occur to you. Also, building military units for the first 30 turns of the game is suicidal for your expansion. ;)
