AAARGH!!!!

I just had to get that out. I wanted to finish my BtS game for once, without being flattened before the modern age. So here I am, the ethiopians, doing pretty well. Its the modern age, I have a good shot at a spaceship win. Ghandi and Gilgamesh had a higher score than I did, but I was technologically level or slightly ahead of them most of the time. I'd fought several wars with Bismark, but he was getting whooped by Ghandi, Gilgy and several others that weren't on our continent. I wanted revenge to be honest, because Bismark kept on attacking me earlier in the game forcing me to switvh production and priorities.

I had tanks and aircraft, Bismark didn't. So I joined in on the war and took two cities from him in one turn. Then he capitulated and the only person higher than myself in the power scale was Gilgamesh. With the territory I took from Bismark I now shared a border with Gilgamesh and the dutch. The dutch and I had gotten along throughout the game and Ghandi was friendly to me. Gilgy stayed at pleased.

Then Ghandi starts trying to win a UN victory. Not enough votes. Good. Not trusting any of the AIs I made sure my border cities were stocked with tanks, aircraft and units to counter any force that would try to throw a monkey wrench in my victory. I was right to do that snce out of the blue Gilgy declares war! And he must have bribed Willem VO too, since they did at the same time! So did the koreans but they were on a different continent. His first strike hit Munich and weakend the defenses. I figured I could get Ghandi and maybe Sitting Bull (same continent) to help me out, but just as I thought that Ghandi wins a cultural victory!

Jeezus mutha-****ing Gawd **** Chr**t!!! My clean victory is ripped right from under me and its my own daggone fault for not disabling cultural victory! AUGH!

To make it a tiny bit more frustrating I decided to start a new game when my wife calls me to tell me I have to meet some friends in like fifteen minutes! Hopefully a few german brewskis will make the sting go away.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

I tried to win a space victory, but because of my conquests on Settler and my own stupidity, I won Domination victory instead! GAH!!! I disabled time and Cultural, but forgot about Domination!!

On the plus side, I scored 20000 points and was ranked as Augustus Caesar. Not bad for playing as Gandhi

no , sorry, its not ur fault for forgettign to disable cultural vicory...its the game. no fun if win everytime right.

lol, but i feel your pain. nearly smashed my screen in few times with this kind of thing.

You're right, and it was a fun game. Still, I was sure that my own cleverness had assured me victory I was hardly paying attention to the other civs. I should have realized Ghandi would do that and done something about it. After all, I knew Gilgamesh would attack me after I hobbled Bismark. Oh well, Lesson learned. ;)

I know it's not what you want to hear.... but hopefully you have now learned the lesson of checking the Victory screen regularly to see what's happening....

When someone like Gandhi suddenly needs 3462 turns to research the next tech and stays that way.... you can be sure something is afoot! ;)

First off, a question for Stylesrj -- how the heck did you ever manage to score 20,000 points at the "Settler" level? What year was it when you won? I typically play at the "Chieftain" level (it's enough of a challenge for me, especially with the new, more aggressive AI) and I've only once beat 10,000 and I'm fairly certain that each level has its own point system (i.e. you score more points for the same thing at higher levels).

For Dante, at what level were you playing? It shows "chieftain", but it sounds like you were playing at a higher level since in all the games my wife and I have played, we have never had that type of problem. I'm guessing that Gilg had some vassals since, given that the U.N. was built, there wasn't the likelihood of a "Holy War".

Naw man, its all good. As you said, its just a game. Its funny how a person can get so emotionally wrapped up in it though, ain't it? I was hell bent on getting revenge on Bismark that I jumped at the chance to smash him while he was preoccupied with his other wars. When he capitulated a shouted at the monitor "Gotcha Mutha-****er! You're MY B***ch now!". Then I forced him to hand over several resources. Aw, that was sweet.....

But like Bismark said when I made him give me his loot, "Wait til next time!".

Omegon, I play at Noble level. I'm not ready to go up yet, especially with the new stuff in BtS. I'd get spanked fast, I think.

Actually, Ghandi did this to me once before, a long time ago in Vanilla Civ 4. I shoulda seen it coming.

I dunno why my score was at 20000 for Settler... it was sort of in the early-middle 19th century my game was, so it might have been 15000 or 10000, like my current game which is in 1914 (10000, might drop to 9000, but wars and improvements bring it up).

All I know is the Domination Victory made me Augustus

I had a similar war declared on me. Victory, Izzy, and I had been long time religious allies. Vicki went free religion in about 1600AD  and started declaring small wars and taking vassals. Fast forward to 2010, Vicki and I are in dead heated point race. No one's getting to domination, cultural, or diplo vic, so it looked like a time vic was at hand. Izzy was a little pissed at Vicki and we had a defense pact for a long time, so she came knockin for a Permanent Alliance. hell yeah, now i got this time victory in pocket. Fast forward to 2035, Vicki declares war! Hatty, her vassal nukes me 4 times and all my defense stacks are rubble. In starts the 4 civ invasion and the end of my victory. unbelievable.

thats why, Dante, you should check on a regular basis the victory conditions screen to see if anybody is walking away culturewise.

ooph dante! the game i'm playing now i don't want to win cultural victory in, but i didn't want to disable it since i haven't seen them try for it yet. so, i left it on and decided that if i get too close i can go into WB and deculturize myself *giggle*. i'm glad you had fun in the game anyway! i think it's nifty that they know how to do that victory type now.

 OMG OMG! i adore hatty, she's the sweetest thing. i feel so guilty denying her requests (altho i do tell her no usually), and i have to agree with her when she pouts and says "that's not very nice, KMad."

i'm in shock that hatty of all people nuked you, my head is spinning! it surely must have been vicki's influence. that woman is trouble. in HoF they do a lot of "fastest X-type victory" games, and often pick opponents by how peaceful they are. many people in HoF like to include her for games where you want trade partners to speed up your tech rate since she's supposedly peacefulish, but she's not really. she's very moody, and when she's bored or whatever, having taken the effort to get her Pleased with you doesn't stop her. i really hate victoria.

man, if hatty ever nukes me i bet i'll start crying! well okay if anybody ever nukes me (nobody has yet) i might start crying since it's clearly a sign that the game isn't going well. but hatty of all people, that would just ... not be good.

I like how the AI seems to be more devious in BTS. In my current game as Ethiopia, I was taking a little tour of the Persian countryside with two sizable stacks. Along comes Sitting Bull asking for a handout. Not really inclined to give him Rifling for free I send him packing. My turn ends, he and his vassal Lizzy declare war and hit my two stacks with 16-20 knights. They follow up with a huge contingent of muskets and trebs. Turning what would have been an easy conquering of Gordium into a dragged battle just to save my border.
What was interesting was that they borders where 8 boxes away from my stacks. So they had brought their SOD's into Cyrus's land just out of my sight and thought "what the heck, lets see what I can get before stabbing him in the back".

I almost lost a game in the same way, surprisingly Hannibal went for a cultural victory on immortal level. I was shocked when I looked at the victory conditions. His capital had over 200,000 culture, by 1700, luckily his lowest was still at 120,000 when I caught on to it. Unfortunetely, my stack of 150+ modern armor/mobileartilery/sams arived and removed the culture from the land with relative ease. Those rifles just couldn't penetrate the armor I guess. Really though I lost that game, but bad hermitage placement by the AI saved me. Culture is just so sneaky, unlike the spaceship, there are no sounds or alerts that are noticeable, and even a backwards, tiny civ who is someones vassal can run away with it.

Do people check the F8 screen? I don't know, but I always do. It's always good to check the domination victory as well because you don't want a rival having too much more land or population than you.

Well, actually, the game had started going perfectly. Vicki had vassalized the entire world except Izzy and I. We got a Permanent alliance. Our score combined was much higher than hers and my military was the strongest by about 500,000 troops. Izzy had a relatively week military, so they just nuked my stacks and went for the win... grrrr....
