I usually do Rome. Not sure if I'm buying at launch, so not sure which options will be avaliable, but if I do, I just might shake things up this time and go with China.
I'm hoping for a Northern European civ I can pick for antiquity, into Normans into Britain/America. Rome and Greece into the Normans ruins the immersion for me. I thought the dissolution of the Roman empire was due to guys like the Normans, so Normans to be a continuation doesn't feel right.
That’s the whole point of the continuations…they ended the political organization but adopted the traditions of the civilization (Romance languages, Roman legal customs, Roman religion, etc.)
I think there are a few interesting choices in the game. A lot would depend on the possible historicals paths.
For instance Rome to Normans doesn't interest me at all, but Rome to Byzanz could be interesting.
From the perspective of the current Antiquity civs, I found Maya and Khmer quite interesting.

Either Roma to Spain (Castillia) or Byzantium interested me more. Note that Constantin I was a person who relocate Seat of Roman Empire to Byzantium, rename it 'Constantinopolis'. and fully turn the empire away from Olympian Gods and into Christianity.
At that point Roma was only a city ruled over from Constantinople and no longer a seat of power. in the last days however, there were separate Roman leader over there. is that when Roman Empire is really divided in half? did the 'West' empire choose its own leader or had its own royal dynasty or is it a sort of Viceroyalty of Byzantium?
Well, Rome with Napoleon (Revolutionary) seems rather powerfull, and would allow me to learn to use the new commanders efficiently, so I may go that way.
I'm actually strongly considering playing as Tecumseh as my first game. While I'm guessing Franklin gets a decent science bonus, he just doesn't look as cool as Tecumseh.
Since my go to game is militaristic, I'm thinking I want to actually start with a combo that is not militaristic at all. Maybe Maya (diplomatic, scientific) for an attempted peaceful science run to start. Not enough leaders announced yet to say - whichever pairs with Maya (or maybe Tecumseh).
Then a leader/civ combo that are both militaristic.
