I got Civ three a few weeks ago and I can't play it well... I either get two much corruption & wastes, get overrun by the enemy, or I don't have as good technology. Does anyone have any hints for me. I've checked the other threads and they had nothing that helped.

Welcome to Civ3. This is not quite the same game you were used to. Corruption is a big part of this one. Here are a few tips

1. Learn to live with it. Slowly over time cities near your capital will become more productive as they grow, you learn more efficient forms of government, and build courthouses.

2. Build close to the capital. Build as many cities as you can as close as you can to your capital. Try not to let many square go unused. Try to position the cities to maximize your use of the terrain.

3. Walk tall and carry a very big stick. If you like to be a peaceful expansionist. Then make sure you maintain a big army. If you dont it is a sign to the AI that you are week and they will pursue you ruthlessly no matter how good your relationship with them is. So always, always, always build and maintain a big army. Look to the military advisor to see how you match up with them.

4. To keep up with the AI in tech. Alot of the time you must trade techs with them especially in the early game. At some difficulty levels I set my science to 20% just so I can make $$$ to buy the techs instead of researching them myself.

5. Culture, Culture, Culture. Dont delay build those temples, libraries and cathedrals as quick as you can. Culture not only extends your boarders but will also help assimilate enemy towns into your own. If your culture rating is much higher than the enemies they resist less and are much less likely to "flip" back to their original owners. The more turns a town has a cultural building the more points go into your culture rating. So make haste and build those temples. Usually when I found a new city they build 1) defensive unit if one didnt follow it. 2) worker 3) temple

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info. I have a thread where I posted save games at various points in the game so others could see how I would progress. Do a search with my name and you should find it.

:o
Go to the Civ editor and change the optimum city size in the map size page, to a large number say 200 for huge maps and 100 for standard map.

Just edit the file call civmod3. There are a lot of stuff you can edit.

Last tips, keep reading this forum, it helps.

The Forbidden Palace is your friend.

If you should be so fortunate as to get a Great Leader, immediately have him rush-build the FP in a city far, far away from your capital.

I did this in a game as the Iroquois and was AMAZED at how much this reduced corruption in those far-flung cities. :D

A fast early build is a huge help. I posted my tips in the thread Fast Build out.

Basically, I have found two decent ways for a fast early build. One involves building the first colonies very close to the capital, two to four squares distant depending on terrain. The second involves using slave camps with access to grass and wheat or cow icons.

For slave camps, I hurry production whenever the population reaches two. First thing is to rush build a settler at pop 2, switch to granary, then rush build the granary when the pop reaches 2 again. After that, rush build whatever you need, but it is great for an early military. If you have no need for units, these units can be disbanded in distant cities to accelerate production.

For the other method, which I call the magic square because the first colonies are often two squares diagonal from the capital, anything can be built. I find one warrior per colony, and one worker for every two colonies is a decent ratio. I find that it is generally not worth it to go after barbarian camps, better to disperse them by building cities near them.

With either method, build a warrior or two first and then a settler. I often send extra workers to join the pop of the capital city to increase the number of settlers that I can crank out.

After a fast build out, you can choose the play style that suits you (on lower difficulties). You can research, you can do culture, you can build units and rush the enemy.

Keep in mind that cities about 15 squares from the capital produce nothing. Slave camps or disbanding units in these distant cities are about the only way to get any production. The Forbidden City is an option at 10 to 12 squares away, and gives you another hub to have another industrial center (magic square).

This is getting to be an extremely long post, but stake out iron and horses early. Focus on those techs if you plan an early war. Also claim any luxury goods. They help a great deal and can often be traded at great profit.

Thanks for the help guys.....It helped alot
