that sir is dangerous info! :P
you see i have windows xp and when i try to run civilization(the original)it says "cant run 16 bit program" thats when im trying to play it off my disc drive i cant even install it! when it reaches like 10% it stops and gets a error! what can i do about it?

1. Place civ disk in D drive (or whatever cd drive is for you)

2. Restart computer in MS-DOS mode.

3. When it says C:\>WINDOWS, type in D:

4. When D:> comes up, type in CIV

5. A lot of files should be copied. After this, it will say D:>CIV and type in CIV. The game should start up.

Good luck.

Buy CivWIN, the Windows version of Civ1. It is the same and works well under Windows. :yeah:

To play the original version for DOS you either need an old DOS boot disk and maybe a DOS partition on your HD or Windows up to Win98.
Win2000, ME and XP cannot run DOS game and even if they do, it will be pretty awful.
There are some certain DOS emulators on the net, but they don´t work reliably enough to be much help. :p

So my advice would be to buy CivWIN, you´ll get it at Ebay for about 1$.
:D

Sorry, seems like there are no more auctions on Ebay. But they may come back at a later time.
There might also be some other sites still selling this version and you can find it in some strategy packs! :yeah:

As for a downloading site, that´s a NO-NO!
:D

Go to any win 9x machine with a 3.5" floppy and format the disk and "copy system files". Then you have DOS boot disk. Put it in and restart your computer (ANY OPERATING SYSTEM). You can run any DOS game now.

Some of the later versions of dos (or it may be a hardware thing?) have trouble with civ, where running civ results in a divide by zero runtime error when running in msdos mode.
Strangely (in my case) running it in Windows (fullscreen dos window) it worked, but was intolerably slow (ie: about 10 seconds to animate the moving of one unit).
Im stuck with using the somewhat ugly and less fun WinCiv to get my civ fix (its starting to annoy me to the point where Im considering devoting the next 50++ weekends to doing a java implementation of civ1!)

its still a good program for windows xp users(like me)

Play Civ on an amiga/macintosh emulator! That's worth the try. Plus, you will never have any problem with zero divide..
Btw, I used to play Lotus Esprit III for DOS for a long time and now I can't play it anymore. Because of the 0 error. I guess it's due to any machine using SDRAM memory, instead of the old classic EDO...

I have a relative who needs to upgrade to a new pc and thus will not have a need for their ancient p166 clunker anymore, which means I might soon be getting the chance to play the proper version of civ once more :-)

I can play civ in DOS without a divide by zero error and I have the SDRAM memory. However, I have seen that message when I tried to play civ in Windows (98 if that matters)
