I think I found out what slows down Peter

Playing my 2nd game, on Prince. I'm gearing up for a space victory and Peter has 1 city. I finally send over some units to scout around him and see if there's any good spots left for cities on his continent. What do I find? 4 barbarian workers, 3 barbarian settlers, mostly unescorted. And right outside his capital. I've already captured 3 of the workers (below).

Note to self: Russia's AI sucks. :/

Edit: Is that a barbarian Battering Ram?

Russia's tundra bias leaves him subject to barbs from the ice tiles. It's also hard to get food with Russia.

I had the same with england in one game. Vicky was on a small island by herself when I found her in the late game I took London her only city and found 5 barb workers and 7 barb settlers just to the south.

My first game in civ 6 was on king, China, continents, standard. I just went tall, seeing IF it is still valuable, i had 3 Core cities and ended the game with just 6 cities in total. I won both science and culture with it.

But i was always second in Score. Peter was on the other continent, absorbed 3 city states and got 2 or 3 cities from Gorgo, founded 4-6 by himself, not sure anymore. The third ai on his continent was arabia, just having ONE or two cities. He was a beast in getting great people, ALL those writers, artists and musicians were hard to get, but luckily he didnt build a lot of ts and i got enough great people to get mine filled.

The general problem of this game is not, that the ai is generally bad, it can be good, but it seems, that sometimes those leaders are Beasts, sometime just brian dead. (Yeah, doesnt really count combat, with archers in a fortified position with the help of some melee, anti cav and obviously cav yourself, you just have to shred their units).

I mean, that barb camp must have been there for millennia. It's probably eaten all of the settlers and workers that Peter ever produced. Just, amazing.

Finding the same in my current game. Even on immortal they still have barb problems in the rennaisance! It's the exact same scenario with Russia...tundra bias will probably cause this quite frequently

I am amazed at how much science you got per turn at turn 200ish and also how you managed all that and don't have siege tactics. I dont have the tech tree in front of me but assume that is some dead end tech or something. Did you build all the science buildings in every city?

I once left a civ alive just to farm the settlers and builders they would occasionally crank out. Talk about exploiting the AI.

I've just opened it, and from what it looks, you don't need Siege Tactics to win a Science Victory. Hell, you don't even need Combustion! How the hell are those rockets going to space??

I just built a lot of cities, and delayed techs and civics that weren't of any use so my district costs would stay low (there's an amazing number of dead-end techs/civics). But recently I tried to focus on science and built science districts pretty much everywhere (~12 out of 18 cities); with the high production bonuses from the German Hansa and the civics that double industrial bonuses, it's trivial to produce the libraries and universities. Then there's some wonders ( i think? ) and civics that double the value of science buildings... that's basically it.

I did end up slogging through this game on my way toward (what I wanted to be) a science victory, but pretty soon after this screen shot I won a cultural victory accidentally. :/ I guess those other tiny civs were just too lame to really do anything.

My experience has been that Germany has a similar problem. It's probably just confirmation bias but every time I find Germany as an AI they've been kept down by Barbarians all game long. When I play Germany as a player, I frequently encounter 2-3 scouts in the first couple of turns, meaning I *have* to focus on defending myself from Barbarians.

Anyone else discovered similar with Germany? It feels like they have a 'barbarian' starting bias.

That's most likely confirmation bias. I've experienced the same with different civilizations.

But Peter really has it a bit worse due to the tundra and snow around.

I have a game where this happened with Gilgamesh. He spawned on a coastal, tundra patch of flatland, with only a river and a deer or two. I picked up three workers and five settlers when I cleared his barb problem for him. Despite this, he was able to fill his entire city with Ziggurats.
