Looking for tips. Just got 5, a vet of 4.

I really wish when I first started playing 5 that somebody told me or i knew....?

Let's keep these threads to a minimum, please. Please continue to use the 1000 reasons you're disappointed in Civ V thread. Thanks. :)

    Moderator Action: Thread reopened.

I misinterpreted the OP, I edited it a bit to make it more clear. Carry on...

...that kittens are still not a bonus resource. You'd think after making so many Civ games they'd realize that people really want kitten resource tiles.

Make dogs a gold-boosting resource. And make China`s UA +5 food from dogs.

    When I started Civ5, I wish I'd known...

    1) That ALL instances of Lux resources are displayed in the Trade lists with other civs, not just your 'extra' Furs or Gems. Thus, you can trade away your only source of Furs and will get -5 Happiness until that trade ends.

    2) That the AI is not very good at combat at all, and needn't be feared. Go on, attack 'em! :)

    3) That garrisoning units in every city can be a big drain on your economy due to unit maintenance.

    4) That the map overlays can be customized to show specific features by clicking the buttons on the minimap.

    5) That building units and then disbanding them is more lucrative than setting cities to build Wealth.

    6) That razing captures cities and then rebuilding them is often more effective than puppeting or annexing.

    7) That the UI elements in the upper-right corner of the screen can be customized or collapsed, and only show science research by default.

    8) That you can rename your units after they're promoted by clicking the little "Edit" link.

    9) That you can rename your civ and leader by clicking the little "Edit" link when you're choosing your nation during game setup.

More later if I think of em, hope this helps. :)

When I started CiV I wish I would have known that

    1. the Industrial revolution is expansive for maintenance.
    2. 50 turns of golden age can give you a hangover.
    3. building circuses is the way of the samurai (and everyone else)

    * That you don’t need triremes to transport units
    * That you need to build happiness buildings steadily throughout the whole game
    * That you can’t buy a courthouse with gold
    * That pillaging the road results in an even uglier hex graphics
    * That maritime city-states give you ridiculous amounts of food
    * That chopping forests outside your terrirtory is not really worth it
    * That the game allows you to trade away your last “instance” of a resource
    * That you can’t land your unit on a ally’s city hex.
    * That the weird three panel diplomacy screen that you get when you click details and then something else can show you who a civ is currently at war with
    * That the diplomacy screens filter out luxury resources that the other party doesn’t need.
    * That you need to keep track on paper where all your resources are coming from because the game doesn’t.
    * That you need to keep your buildings to an absolute minimum.
    * That there is no safe distance to catapult a city from.
    * That a pact of secrecy is not really secret and it hurts relations with the victim.
    * That you don’t need to wait for your caravel to be completed when you get astronomy, just get those scouts in the water!

    - That I can disable battle animations in the Advanced Setup menu.
    - That a hill will prevent my archer from shooting over it, even when it's within 2 tiles.

That I needed steam even if I bought the physical copy.
I would have just bought it from steam and have gotten the Babylonians.
    (for $10 USD more). :(
