I have finally won! It has only been about 6 years, I think I got this in 2005 or 2006. I had won a few games of 2 or 3 civilizations, but honestly, they didn't feel like victories because there was virtually a 50% chance to win.

I just won in 1942 (or was it 1962) by being elected some kind of UN Peacekeeper Person or something. I won the UN election, and was proclaimed winner with a diplomatic victory. There were EIGHT OTHER civilizations. Never in my wildest dreams would I expect to win out of 9 countries. I am not the "master" so many allude to, I play the game for a lot of fun, and constantly do. I often give up somewhere in the 1200's to 1700's, because everything gets so big and I've played so long. I've never been in 1st during one of those.

I also put everything on "random" that I can, and this particular game was random continents, with everything random that could be. I think it would be level 4...cannot remember the name.

Anyway, after probably 500-1000 games started over the years, I WON!!!

The real difference was, I checked each city every turn they could build, so I had almost no pollution or strikes all game. I was also on a continent with China, and I had the lower half and they had the upper part. I expanded quickly, so I cut them to only about the top 1/4 of the continent, and then basically spent a long time just building my city. I was 1st to discover the round world, first to have metal ships, Jeao II (Portugal guy) was often in 1st, and then dropped to 2nd when I took over and stayed close.

I became friendly with everyone, most liked me a lot, made war on China but eventually allowed them to become my vassal quickly, then I made war on Louis XIV, did get a city on "his" continent, but then made peace with him and Mansa Munsa (Louis was his vassal). That was it as far as wars, and by the end of the game I had an incredible military fleet on the waters.

Being able to build my civ with only China close for so long was good, and then I traded fairly and often gave gifts to other civs. When UN time came, all voted for me but 2 who abstained and 1 who said NO. Guess who that was (hint: China was my vassal).

Anyway, I play the game for fun, but to actually win a game...I kind of thought it would never happen, a real, full world victory. I was very efficient in how I developed my cities, and was really impressed by almost having NO strikes/pollution throughout history. A few times, but hardly ever. I was one or two in almost all categories at the end, except approval, which was 6th (and that was surprising) and import/export where I was 9th (still don't know why or how to improve that one). Being alone on a continent (China could only come down through one way, very narrow, and I had a city right there, so they never tried) allowed me to really develop well.

Of course, I did go back and play more after I won, had some fun nuking out Louis XIV [hey, he deserved it, with that stupid wig and all] while trying to destroy his country, but gave up playing around 1980.

I RULED THE WORLD!!! (...and it felt good)

I don't really understand the diplomatic victory. How exactly do you get people to vote for you?

You are trusted by other world leaders to serve as a mediator of world peace.

In reality, they must vote for you or die. :D

Thanks!!! I think THE difference this game was that I kept checking on health and unhappiness per city, and for some reason it seemed to allow us to grow very prosperously. The difficulty level was not so high, but to win over 8 other Civs...I was so happy! Maybe the constant monitoring was it.

(and I was the "trigger" of UN votes, and at one point it asked for me to vote for a leader, and I voted for me...then I was very friendly with everyone else and most of them voted for me and I won...almost everyone [aka CHINA] had a positive relationship with me, I don't think that ever happened before; I would trade fairly and sometimes give stuff away and make friends with others)

I know what you mean. I have won a few games but I have quit _so many_ games. I just get bored. Either I'm losing badly and know I won't be able to make it up so I just declare it a loss and quit or start over, or I'm winning and i just honestly CBA to keep pushing around units to either dominate the world or just keep running through turns to reach a victory condition. Its fun at the start when you're working to get your civ up and running, and it's fun slapping down other civilizations to get your head above everyone else, but once I get to that point, the game is so boring.

For those of you who want to see a diplomatic victory being pulled off, here.

More than 90% of my games are quit in that way, even though I am winning, because it just bores me. Most in the lategame.

I decided to stop quitting games and start retiring if I'm going to stop playing for whatever reason. This way it posts to the leader board as a loss and motivates me to do better next time!

Just a quick poke that may or may not help keep your interest in the game -- try reducing the randoms a little bit. I, like you, like a diverse play, but a goal or focus you can try and plan on can keep your interest. For instance, I sometimes will pick a fractal map (which is pretty random, in its own right) with a leader I like (Hannibal, Darius... Ghandi maybe if I'm feeling really spunky :crazyeye:) and try and get the earliest domination/conquest victory I can. I still keep standard settings and huts/events (for added randomness), and random rivals, but knowing who I'm playing as, and having a goal will often inspire me to stay interested. Even if I can't get a domination or something, I'll just continue on and win Space or whatever... assuming I don't get myself killed, lol. Or do the same thing but aim for a culture victory. Good job though, hope you continue enjoying the game :)

Thanks! I could not believe how well the game was going, and it just kept getting better and better. I was in 2nd place a long time, but once I took over 1st, it was a cruise to victory.

I think it was being really nice to everyone, and also having constant (and correct) city management.

It was a fun game, and I rejoyce in your rejoycement!!!;)

It's actually funny, I am kind of the exact reverse. It is the randomness that keeps me going back all the time. No matter what game I start, I never know who I will be (what strategy will be needed), who I will fight/ally with, what is where...that is one of the things that I find so incredible about this game...it is always new (and I hate that Zulu guy, whenever he is on a map I cringe, literally).

That game just flowed so well for me, it was the best game I ever had.
