We've heard arguments for and against expanding Civ2 GOTM to two months, but the important thing is how many would participate either way. Let us know. Would you stop participating if it went to two months? Have you never played but might consider if it went to two months? How many participants will we get either way?

ONE MONTH!

I probably would continue to play with 2 months because I love this game .
BUT I think it would be the death of the Civ2-GOTM.
Not immediately but sooner or later.
The fun factor of playing and discussing the game while playing would be lost. The quicker players finish their game in the beginning of the first month, discuss them and forget them! And the slower ones couldn´t participate in the discussion with the quicker and the other way around!

ONE MONTH!

I'll play the Civ 2 GOTM when I have the time... one month or two is not a factor. Make it one year, and I'll go back and play the GOTMs 9 thru 15, LOL.... (j/k!)

I've only just started playing the GOTM. It would be great to keep it monthly, though I probably would play a bi-monthly game. The monthly option would be better though.

I suppose one month would be best, that Lucky is right about the Fun Factor of doing it, discussing it, and moving on.

However, I play the way I imagine Old n Slow does - I'm old and I play slowly. Careful thought and management is the fun. So I prefer the small maps. One gotm I attempted was not finished.
I recognize that not everyone prefers a small map. I don't even know what this month's is. What is 60 x 60? Anyway, I've blazed up to 425 BC, and my world is about 20 x 18

Perhaps another idea: why not list a player's submission even if the game is not 'Finished'? Is it a potential mathematical problem? Might you require at least 1AD, or 1000AD?

Summary, I'll play either one month or two, no problem.

ONE month is better :
as it was said before, it's the only way to keep it alive....

First, 60x60 is a custom made map, 40 tiles less than standard (50x80). Made by Smash.

Second, that would be difficult, as one of the top requirements of the GOTM is to finish in a valid way. Without that rule, someone could simply finish at 4000BC, having built one city, making the person happy. That would lead to a Civ score of 27 (with raging barbs) and that would be a considerable GOTM score!
So it can´t be done.
:D

Would you settle for a score of 27? :)

I think an early suicide could get a depreciated Barb 25 bonus & end up with a 23 or 24 -- respectable? Actually the low 20's are better than some at the bottom, but I think the fun value is reduced.

I know I could have done better with GOTM 16 (but I always feel that way). :D

I'd love to see a two-month window b/c I'm a methodical (i.e. slow) Civ player. But if everyone else can get done in a month, it should stay as a game of the month.

How come nobody asks about a game of the week? Take a 20 x 20 map -- OCC gets a point bonus. :D

Hey, Old n Slow... you ever considered changing your handle to something like GiveMeMoreCiv? Wow, a asking for weekly civ game... now that really marks you as a CivFanatic!!

We already have/had several of these weekly suggestions for this GOTM and the Civ3 one, but they all ended up stranded in nowhere.

Most people have too much of a real life (at least the time constraints due to this) to make this possible. :p

But I really think that some variations, edited maps or scenarios could make things more interesting again.
:D

Who on earth revived this 5 month old thread????????????

Of course, I'll play as soon as I am confident in my skills again..

Make it! Make a page for it...no need for it to be a CFC game, but I am sure you can use the one of the Civ2 fora to hold a thread about it. :)

That Spammeister starlifter! :p

And I'd like to see it stay monthly, I could almost go for a GOTWeek too, but then again I'm only 15 and go to school :D

I've really gotta get into GOTM before I can comment much though...Maybe next time a Prince game comes along :(

Now you don't wanna only do Prince, do you? Hop on in and give it a try.... play conservatively and methodically while concentrating more on Happiness at higher difficulty level. It really is more knowledge than mystical skill at higher levels. Once you do it, and get used to higher levels, then more of the "art" of things becomes involved to become ever more efficient and faster. Don't worry about the speed of finish element of the GOTM at first, just play it like a 2020 deadline, and after a few games (GOTM or not) at higher levels, you really will wonder why you didn't take the plunge (to higher levels) sooner. PS, if you get stuck on what to do in a game, then post in the Spoiler thread & ask.... A bunch of people will be ready with ideas, no doubt!

:)

I only play Civ about twice a day -- once when I get up & the other just before going to bed. Isn't that the same with everyone else? :D

For Ren -- I'm still playing more frequently on Prince level than any other -- only now the challenge is different. I'm still working through my Wonder Building fixation -- the challenge for me is to repeat the building of all the Wonders in one city (Prince level, large random map, raging hordes, generally peaceful relations with ai). The more I think about it, the challenge can be met on a higher level by relaxing the other conditions (smaller map, known (created) terrain, aggressivly kill off some civs before the wonder building stages), but I'm also learning about the interrelated aspects of the game:

1) More cities early on means more of Everything later on -- very key, and I still don't practice this rule enough.

2) Search -- good things happen with knowledge & better things happen with more knowledge -- I should do more of this as well.

3) Keep a log -- minor lesson for some, but this is a new one for me. I've noticed that the better players are careful about their play & a log helps to a) allow additional learning, b) help the player keep track of potential advantages (such as a retoggle of the Sci/$$/lux bar for one turn to still get the advance on time, but gain some extra $$ "at no cost" (the only cost is the risk of not toggling back)), c) allow the player to form a more organized method of play, and d) more that I have yet to learn.

But Starlifter is right -- feel free to experiment at different levels -- some different stuff happens.

I noticed that disbanding a city at Chieftan level is not the option as it is at higher levels. At the higher levels, the sages claim that only one NON settler is available per continent -- twice since I've read that I've been able to get additional NON settlers on the same continent -- but at the Warlord level.

A second consideration that you may want to try is to apply a lesson in a lower level, see if you like it, then work it into you regular game at your "comfortable" level. After a couple of those experiments, you might want to attempt a higher level so you can see where the new comfort lies.

Hey thanks for the help guys, though I usually use most of your tactics already, Old n Slow, except logging of course.

I do experiment with higher levels and I usually get slaughtered badly, even at King :( It really is the starting off that kills me, after I get underway in Prince I'm about as easy to stop as a 50 carriage coal train headed downhill :D

I can sometimes get a reasonable Deity game if I start isolated with lots of good land...

I'll have a go at this GOTM, it's not due until the start of next month, right?

Oh, btw..

It is possible, you must use an Engineer or a Settler to change the land underneath the city to forest, then the city will have 1 hunger at size 1 :). This doesn't work if the forest has a Pheasant though.

And you're still a Spammeister, starlifter :p
