In going through my old code I found the route pillage mod and it started me thinking... would there be any use for a mod comp that would allow you to select what to pillage in a square? For instance if a warrior is sitting on an enemy tile with a road and a farm you would have the choice to pillage one of the two... What do you guys think? Is there something like this already out there? Is there a need for something like this?

This sounds like a good idea. :)

My own take on pillaging would be that it to heals damage, but I currently don't know how to make the AI make use of such a feature. (This would by the way be connected to my mod idea for giving damage to units outside of cultural borders, especially in hostile territory. But this also offers AI challenges, as any AI unit damaged will become stationary until its healed. And this takes time since there is new damage every turn, so the AI is basically out of commission.)

Pillaging heals damage? How would that work in real life? Typically when someone pillages they are destroying things not worrying about their health... though now that I think of it they could depending on what was being pillaged, for instance if you are pillaging a farm your damaged unit could gain some health.

Oh, the way warfare has worked through-out history. Soldiers "living off the land"... You know, getting supplies and also new recruits to fill gaps in the lines. This is actually still happening in parts of the world. Ever heard of child solders? Rape and plunder? Ring a bell?

Flying in KFC to troops stationed on another continent is a modern phenomenon, after all... (Maybe modern units combined with some end-of-the-line Civic would disable the ability to heal damage from pillaging. Also, its not like that Town is going to have spare parts for an Abrams, right?)

LOL Baldyr, are you talking about pillaging or are you talking about foraging and pressing people into service? The rape and plunder I wholly agree is pillaging.

Its the same thing. Something like a medieval siege was basically a huge pillaging endeavor, as the besieging troops weren't getting any supplies from home. So the armies would send out pillaging parties further and further away from the actual stronghold they were supposed to be cutting off from supplies.

So its basically an issue of supplies - there was none before modern times. The soldiers pillaged for all needs and purposes. And there probably was rape also. And bloody murder. Warfare is horrid!

Another idea of mine is actually supply lines, which would work much like trade networks but in foreign territory. As long there is a supply line back to friendly borders, there would be none or less damage for being in hostile territory. So it would make sense to cut invading troops of from supplies, so that the units would die once there is no more improvements to pillage. It would also make the scorched earth tactic valid - meaning that you pillage your own improvements in front of an invading army. Then you encircle those units from fresh supplies. The ill-fated invasion of the Soviet Union, anyone?

But this would only apply in the industrial era. In previous eras there would actually be units that don't get this kind of damage. Like nomad units (Horse Archers) that truly live off the land.
