Idea: limit simultaneous use of strategic resources

Strategic resources are scarcier in C3C. I think the game designers just want to force players to fight for them and make the game a little more fun.

More fun indeed, but it's a really big change for people who prefer a peaceful way of final victory.

So how about this idea: limit simultaneous use of strategic resource.

For example, if I have one iron, it can only produce enough iron to support 5 cities. So you cannot build 6 units which require iron at the same time. At the same time, keep strategic resources the same way in CIV3, so that each player still has a reasonable chance of getting at least one of them.

This way, peacelovers can at least slowly build a defentive force to protect their hometowns, instead of being forced to wage wars. Warmongers would have to wage war if they want to build faster.

This also would have to make players think twice before they trade strategic resources - because unlike the current game, each instance of resource counts. This is more realistic.

In the editor, for each strategic resources there should be a counter to specify how many cities can use it at the same time.

More fun comes if some wonders/techs could increase this number.

The same idea could be extended to other resources.

you are asking for something, that requires re-programming hardcoded stuff, and very serious one. well... forget about it, no company would do that for you. especially that there is much easier way, and you can do it yourself in 30 seconds... just open the editor and adjust the appearance ratios of strategic resources to your liking.
BTW ratios are the same as in Civ3/PTW, but somehow they seem to produce less resources... I'll test it more tomorrow to find new formula.

Probably because there are more resource types, the max amount of resources on the map is 4% of the map surface I believe.

I guess I was mixing two topics, but in fact "one resource only supports limited number of cities" and "how many resources could appear" are totally independent.

It's not really realistic that one instance of resource could support all cities, no matter how big your empire is. As you grow, the need for more resources also grows. This makes trading more fun too.

The problem is that if you would normally add more bonus resources, you would get less bonus resources, not strategic ones. ie. if you make the same resource set in PTW, you will still get strategics right. it means they changed the overall formula.

There is a new option in the editor that the resource must be within the city's radius in order to build an improvement; I suppose they might be able to extend this to units too, but for the time being you can make improvements that automatically spawn the units every 5 turns or something as long as the resource is in the city radius (max. of 6 or 8 cities or something can share a single resource if the terrain is accomodating -- something of an exploit in the AoD conquest, actually)

I think that would be a good option if it were an option type of thing. I also think that resources should have a fixed trade value that could gradually change with time. Perhaps resources should be mined or harvested to be used and every mine could have a max supply limit. Like 1 oil well could supply 10 cities for 50 turns and then its out. You could buy into the supply of that oil well for a certain amount of gold from each other and designate which city to supply.
