I think this might be interesting. Whenever you enter a new era, you get a pop-up which lets you choose a "unique" perk or trait depending on how you performed. You may qualify for a certain trait when you did a critical number of combats (win/loss ratio perhaps) or if you expanded your culture or religion by a certain amount. Or when you constructed a lot of improvments or increased your diplomacy standing by a good amount. Basicly, if you did very, very good in a certain area, you qualify for the perk. Of course you can only take one per era. The traits you choose may alter your overall performance or they may be a one time bonus.
Im thinking this:
Lots of combats won/lost in that era: You may get a warmonger-perk which will make all your units start with one more XP or all units get a perk that gives them + 10 % (for example) when attacking. Or you may choose to get the one-time bonus for this era-bonus which is perhaps a great general or maybe a unique building (war academy but more powerful) in a city of yours.
Lots of improvements done: all workers get a + 20 % construction bonus OR the one-time bonus which will randomly create 2 ressources (of that era) within your borders.
lots of culture done: get a building that grants lots of culture per turn within one of your cities OR advance one city to the next level immediatly.
etc.
