I've been thinking. When posterity looks back at this era, do you think you would want them to learn about the "War on Terrorism"? I'm assuming, of course that we win. We have to win.

I'd like to hear suggestions for a better sounding name that will go right with the 'American Revolution', the 'Civil War', World Wars 1 and 2, and so on.

KoE, when you say Civil War, which do you mean? Isn't it weird that when someone mentions the resistance, it is assumed that they mean the French resistance fighters in WW2, but when you say the Civil War then it is entirely open depending on where you come from. I assume you mean the US civil war since you are in SF, but nearly every country has its own civil war and some banana republics have one every few years. This is despite the fact that there are as many resistance groups as there have been civil wars, but they are still known as the Resistance. Odd.

Well, assuming America is being serious about wiping out terrorism completely of course. Because that will mean going into Iran, Syria, Ireland, Indonesia, and the list goes on.

And that will mean Coalitions and Anti-Coalitions all over the place.

Anyway, it's global in scope and involves, in principle, almost every country in the world. Why not call it World War III?

Because that would be an insult to all those who fought in the other two world wars: this is not world war 3 and is not likely to be IMO - it is the US bombing places (when are they going to take afghanistan over - what is the point of bombing it, really?)

I still like my name for it The War Against Terrorism as an acronym (for all you who ignored it before)

I think it sums everything in this 'war' so far pretty nicely

You're right. My point was that these names were all short, so American Civil War, or Spanish Civil War, Guatemala Civil War or whatever nation's civil war are all good names for these events. You wouldn't call any of them the 'War against the other guys trying to take over the country'. BTW, thanks for your input, everybody!!

I think we will have to wait and see what developes before slapping a name on it. Things could still spiral out of control, but I don't think that is likely.

When it started, I thought it was WWIII, but its not. Yet. Consider this: No country has declared war on another country. No country besides the US and Afghanistan have been attacked, yet. The attack in Afghanistan by the US/GB isn't even against the "country" of Afghanistan, but a group of mainly foreign terrorists and a illegitimate (by most peoples view) government and its military.

It's confusing, nothing quite like this has happened before. I think in the future (looking back) people will have more information (and know the outcome!) and will sit around and second guess everything like we do!
