iexplore.exe running in background

Okay, I've noticed for awhile now that iexplore.exe is running two or three process's on my computer at one time, and everytime I try to end it, it comes back immediantly.

I've always thought that iexplore.exe is basicly Internet Explorer, which I haven't ran in about a year, and I didn't even think I had it on my computer anymore. So that eliminates the possibility that, surprise, I might be running (willingly anyway) internet explorer.

Is there anyway I can get it to stop? Or am I wrong and this is not internet explorer and something else?

iexplore.exe = Internet Explorer. I've got no idea why it would be running multiple processes though. Is it still there when you have no other programs running? Spyware or something may be the cause too.

I use firefox but when I look in the Applications tab of task manager it says iexplorer running in the background next to where it says the web page (nothing under processes). So depending on what browser you DO use it might be something which is needed for internet connection. AFAIK IE is integral to some extent to windows XP.

Explorer.exe is what windows uses to 'run windows'. At least, that's the UI. If you exit it, windows doesn't shut down, but you loose your desktop and systray, I think. You can restart it by ctrl-alt-del, an pulling up the Task manager. Click on File, and New Task, you can restart explorer. But that's not what's being asked, I know.

iexplorer is the web browser. My guess is that it's some kind of spyware running.

My son had this problem recently, associated with a worm (whose name I have forgotten). We tried killing the iexplore.exe, but some process we could not identify always restarted it. We finally killed it by starting in safe mode and removing a couple of suspiciously named directories and their contents from the profile directories. The directories clearly had nothing to do with the OS (which was XP home, btw), so it was easy to identify and delete them. Interestingly, the machine had symantec antivirus on it, with recent updates, but that failed to find or clean this problem. Spybot S & D also failed on this one. The computer's performance improved markedly after we disabled the virus.

We'll I'm not that good with computers, and don't really want to go around deleting stuff just because it sounds odd.

Also, I do use Mozilla Firefox, but the iexplore.exe runs even when I'm not running firefox. However, having some connection to the internet might be it, because I have a DSL modem hooked through a router, so my internet is always on.

Of course, that still doesn't explain why it's running multiple processes, I ran acouple of spyware programs and antivirus in normal and safe mode, with no success.

Edit: Also, does anyone have any idea what ccApp.exe and rundll32.exe might be?

A good way to know what a process is is to just google the name, it usually comes up :)

ccApp and rundll32 are normal, rundll32 is essential, without it your pc restarts (IIRC)
ccApp = common client application IIRC.

I have mozilla too, and iexplore.exe HAD BEEN running in the background constantly. Not recently anymore, since I deleted some suspicious stuff :hmm:
Try blocking internet access to Iexplorer in zonealarm, that shut it up permanently for me. Not recommended though, since IE is dug in in windows and constantly looks for internet access.

Here are some links to help explain iexplore.exe (these were all found with a quick google search for iexplore.exe)

If you are concerned, do an on demand scan with your antivirus software and/or go to TrendMicro or McAfee and use their online scanners.

If you have a process iexplorer.exe, then you have a problem...

I had the problem of multiple iexplorer.exe in processes (XP Home), but now the problem has disappeared... all I have run that may have stopped it is Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Blaster and Microsoft Antispyware...
