They are probably not needed where every one lives either, but they are still useful.

Not very, but it is possible for almost anyone to be in the middle of nowhere at some time or other.
This would essentially bring the state of humanity back to <10000BC, with no risk of disease or infection. However, there would be no possibility of significant technological advancement since institutions (such as governments or universities) could not be formed.
And yes, I would much rather have been born in a time where I had no sense of knowledge, than in a time where I knew the destructive power of knowledge.
Bigotry and poverty.
