I've been playing this on and off for a few years now, and while I've tried random civ on occasion, I always come back to Spain for pure enjoyment. I think I just like the race and battle for those "perfect" wonder cities. But I feel like without branching out, I'm probably missing other fun, unique experiences.

Someone sell me on a civ to try that would be fun. I tend to focus on wonders and culture and avoid war where I can (although I will administer a curbstomping for good resources). I have G&K, but not BNW.

I play standard, continents....any reasons I should change that too?

Do you do the Tradition 4-city start thing? Try using Montezuma and fill out the Honor tree. Or Arabia and fill out the Liberty tree. Or a warmonger game with Japan.

Spain is fun. Do you ever use the conquistador to actually found a city? Seems like a waste of a great unit to me.

Maya/Ethiopia/France will probably suit your playstyle although Egypt are good wonder spamming. England/Russia/Aztecs/Inca are solid too but will give diversity in gameplay rather than just civs. Inca can give you wonders and Aztecs culture but you'd have to gear Inca for culture specifically and playing peacefully doesn't suit Aztecs. You can only kill barbarians for so long and with all those Woodsmen promotions.

From your post I think you'd be the type of person who'd enjoy BNW civs a lot. Brazil possibly but probably Shoshone/Morocco/new France/Poland.

I just used a conquistador to found a city last night. There was a 2-tile island surrounded by fish and atolls with spices on one of the tiles and a barbarian encampment on the other. I had about 7 conqs floating around since I just wiped Korea off my continent. So I boated one over to kill and settle.

Other than a situation like that, it's rarely useful.

As for policies, I usually close out, in this order, liberty, patronage, rationalism, then just see where I am for democracy or communism. I'm a creature of habit.

I understand perfectly...Spain is my "hands down" favourite. Getting those great cities going with wonders like LV and KSM, maybe Uluru... ...it is just so much fun......

I tend to roll and re-roll until I get an interesting combination of wonders to work with.... KSM with its 12 production so early in the game is deadly for the others.....

And as we speak in my current game, I managed after a number of re-rolls to end up with a KSM/LV combination....I only have two cities but they are both great centres of production and population growth.... but they are quite far apart and my capital is not on the coast.... I'm at the stage now of deciding when best to seize the coastal city Austria dropped a few hexes away from Madrid.....

Other combinations of wonders can be fun too.... Kilimanjaro is nice....about the only natural wonders I don't particularly want are Old Faithful and the Grand Mesa..... also Mt Sinai is often in a hopeless location for much of anything other than producing faith.

But...........................it can get tedious.... Then I like to play the Mongols and go the Honour route..... Or Venice, to see how high I can get the GPT.

I have yet to try France in BNW...maybe I should give that civ another try. I know you have to play the various civs yourself to see how they are...the AI never seem to optimize any of them. The way the Mongol AI mismanages its Keshiks is almost impossible to believe.....

Oh, that's a shame then. I caught it on sale 3 weeks ago for $7.50. :-/

I have found some of the new BNW civs to be very enjoyable as well. Some instant favorites were civs with unique tiles as it changes some normal patterns. aka:

Inca for their ability to grow large in hill/mountain areas with terrace farm,

Portugal for the Polder, allows you ransom loads of free luxuries from CS's whether or not you're friends. And the Nau rakes in tons of gold and food trading with CS's.

Shoshone were also very enjoyable due to their 2 unique abilities that rapidly acquire tiles and let you choose the prize of ancient ruins! Easy to get a religion/culture boost early with that! They always start off the strongest but their abilities are early focused.

Indonesia is fun: their weird swordsmen get random abilities upon first combat from a large list. All are super-unique and many very powerful like healing 50 hp upon killing another unit or +40% to fortified defense. These all upgrade to make impressive late-game melee. Their spice islanders ability allows you to acquire 3 unique luxuries just by settling off continent. One for you and 1 for trading.

Ottomans: all his ships have a 50% capture rate meaning you steal 1/2 of your opponents navy as you are beating it and acquire money every time. The new ships heal 1/2 so they usually survive and add to the naval juggernaut.

Polynesia: odd to get used too but can be pretty fun. His Maori can be built on otherwise worthless coastal tiles to generate +3 culture each if you build them in lines with 2 adjacent. Sometimes more if you have an odd perforated coastland. You'll have to sacrifice the 1 food from a farm but 3 culture as a replacement is worth it to me! This extra culture is awesome for nabbing lots of early policies. Plus his ability to instantly cross all oceans with the scout unit lets him get all the early ruins and set up worldwide trading. On an archipelego map build a few and you'll probably rake in like 10-20 ruins depending on the size. Puts you way ahead in tech, population, religion, culture, and advanced unit upgrades.

If you like tall India is the best. I know he can be lame to use because of the big initial penalty to settle new cities but he's great. He is the only civ that can produce cities that fully support all their own happiness penalties meaning you can make as many size 12 cities as you want and keep expanding slowly nearly forever. This is because he only gets -0.5 unhappiness per pop + an initial -6 upon settling. However, he can build happy buildings and generation as if his population was taking -1 apiece. aka: he can go wide and tall at the same time. So at size 12 you can generate 12 happiness max due to population and this covers the entire cost of the city: 0.5*12 + 6 = 12. Or you can use the benefits to raise up 50 population cities that are the best in the world for only a fraction of the unhappiness that other civs incur.

You should try out various mods, such as the Seleucid Empire. If you're a fan of the Mass Effect series, there's a ton of civs from that. My favorite vanilla civ has to be the Dutch, because of the sick money you make off of the polders

Spain is the best .. by far, no question about it. We can't sell you anything better. :D

But why not get BNW and try out other godly civs as well?

Ethiopia - Religion is yours. And a strong one at that. So, no happiness problems, ever. Pick pagodas and mosques and concentrate on "important stuff". No need to roll maps.

Poland - Free social policy in every era? And plains start bias, where you end up in fields of salt 50% of the time.

Maya - Everyone produces great people. Mayans get them for free. Great admiral will do the exploration.

Venice - You won't know that cash is king until you try this little civ.

Shoshone - No need to buy tiles and grow borders. Guaranteed culture ruin, guaranteed pantheon.

Free is exactly what they are. Great people tend to increase the GPP threshold though. Even "free" ones.

So they aren't free because they increase the threshold.

Nope. They are free because you don't need to work specialists for 20 turns to get them. You just get them .. for free. :)

Spain is an overpowered, free win noob civ. The most commonly banned civ in multiplayer games. Play something else. Sold?

Since they increase the threshold they have a price and cannot be free. Rather they are instant.

Insignificant price, compared to bonuses. Makes them free in my book.

Grab a watery map, find yourself some iron and rule the waves as England!

With extra movement for naval and embarked units, speedy exploration lets me meet everyone quickly, spot natural wonders at just the right time when I need a few more happiness, find more city states.

UU is a strong frigate with seven moves and extra sight, while the Longbow has 3 range.

Oh - and there's an extra spy. Whats not to like?

    Wonders : Egypt.
Culture : France (entertainment with theming bonus and chateau), Polynesia (the long Moai beach).

Which is your difficult level by default ?

Also, on continents, Dutch, Sweden, Austria are interesting. Try a Dutch Autocracy CV, Sweden Liberty DV or Austria Order SV.
