Hi I just finished reading the story. It is excellent by the way. I also learned a few ideas I can incorporate into my already impressive game plans. ;)
    Keep up the updates.

I just got through reading up to this point, and absolutely had to rate this 5 stars. This has been entertaining and informative!! I can't wait to see how the wars go!

And will Willem ever officially propose to Ilse...??

    @Rabid and Darwin - thanks!

    *********************

A low-lit room in Cahokia. Sitting Bull and the former king of Scythia are deep in discussion.

“Farsa, make me an offer,” Sitting Bull says.

“Refuge for my people, perhaps in the city of Cahokia?”

    “No.”

“Fine, we’ll find better situations elsewhere.”

“Nonsense. Who else would grant you refuge? Wang Kon is out of the picture as a vassal to Ragnar, who doesn’t really care to provoke the Dutch right now. Gilgamesh doesn’t either. It’s us or nothing.”

“You are cruel with your bargaining position.”

“Refuge in reservations of our choosing. Take it or leave it.”

    “We’ll take it.”

“Excellent. Your first task is to blow up the dike in Ollantaytambo.”

A messenger knocks on the door to the small room.

    “Come in,” Bull says.

“Sir, urgent news from General Geronimo! We are under attack by Dutch invaders in the west along the shore, and in the north by a column headed from Maastricht to Chaco Canyon!”

“Put me in contact with Geronimo immediately! Turning to Farsa, Bull adds, “and blow up some Dutch airports while you’re at it. Get moving!”

    ***************************
    Spoiler :

Sheesh, we just got done buying that dike via UniSuff, too! (927)

Bull has a cavalry-based army with cannon support. He also has a ton of riflemen and grenadiers. Many of his lesser cities have only rifles or grenadiers. As you guys pointed out, it’s nice to know what you’re up against, and having holy vision or enough EP points to see enemy cities is useful in this regard. (931-32)

We get a few more gpt via trade and negotiation. (934, 36)

As usual before a war, we check to see that nobody’s hands are full. Sure enough, nobody has full hands, not even Sitting Bull. (937)

All clear! Time to die, cultural invader! (940)

A Dutch aircraft bombs that Native American oil field to the west of Maastricht, which we marked for destruction so long ago; this is something that the Dutch air force does at every opportunity during the course of the war. (942)

Operation Hopper gets off to a rocky start, as the task force is pummeled by enemy cannons and numerous enemy attacks. (943-45)

Our Drill-promoted tanks are so battered that our collateral-damage-immune artillery are left to pick up the slack towards the end of the enemy charge. Amazingly, we lose no units, though the task force is now combat ineffective and must heal for a while. (952)

We also discover Satellites and go for Advanced Flight next to get jet fighters. (948)

Terrorists destroy Leiden airport but are thwarted elsewhere. We also learn that Gilgamesh has completed Apollo. He won’t live long enough to enjoy it, though. (950)

Our navy engages in fierce fights with the Native American navy as we pillage and blockade the enemy, but whereas we are replacing any losses, the Native Americans are starved for oil and can’t replace their losses. Also, Delft loses its airport to more terrorist scum. (954-55)

As Operation Hopper stalls, we can do noting but airlift reinforcements to Khoisan and other southern cities and wait for the task force to heal up next to Spiro. Khoisan-based bombers continue to pound Spiro to keep the forces there from going on the offensive against our garrison in Khoisan. Our navy continues to fight off enemy counterattacks. (957, 962)

Meanwhile, Operation Zeus’s bombers hammer Chaco Canyon. Our artillery severely damages the survivors. A few tanks stay outside to protect the artillery, while the remaining tanks capture the city itself. (958-60)

    *RING RING*

    “General Geronimo speaking.”

“This is Bull. What the heck is going on?”

“I’m here in Spiro. We are throwing everything we have into Chaco Canyon. There are at least a dozen tank divisions and at least half a dozen artillery battalions in all, with strong air support. We’re also attacking the amphibious invasion at Spiro with cannons, cavalry, rifles, grenadiers, and anything else on hand, but they’ve established a strong beachhead and are not going to give it up easily. Wait, hold on a minute.”

    “Okay.”

    “Chaco Canyon just fell, sir.”

    “What?!”

“Spiro is under extremely heavy siege as well. They are so arrogant as to rush us with troops armed with medieval-era weapons, but our forces are decimated from air and artillery strikes and can’t fend them off.”

“Never surrender. Never retreat. Fight to the last man!”

“Yes sir! But I do think that I will relocate to Jute soon. Also, Gilgamesh just launched a rocket that we observed, but it doesn’t seem to be military in nature. I suppose he thinks that he’ll make it to the moon!”

    *********************************

    Spoiler :

A sentry-promoted submarine or two will help us keep an eye out for Viking aggression. Amsterdam is the first city in the world to become Legendary, by the way. (964)

More barb cities fall to Ragnar, who continues to have empty hands after vassalizing Korea. (965)

Operation Hopper resumes when most of the tanks recover to green health. Our bombers pulverize the resistance, allowing artillery to have high odds against surviving defenders. Our melee units get their obligatory xp before the tanks wipe out the remaining units. However, we leave a defender alive, as we want to milk this city for more xp for our melee units, as they are getting close to 26 xp and thus level 6, which unlocks West Point. (966-68)

Our transports pick off weaker ships to get to 10 xp, which allows for another movement promo and thus faster movement. (973)

The only thing that can stop our advances is mass cannon attacks followed by huge cavalry rushes, but Bull’s remaining cannons remain too dispersed to seriously threaten our armies. (975)

Operation Heist never really gets off the ground, as saboteurs slow down military production in Delft and new units are sent to reinforce Khoisan. It will be a while before we have enough spare units to mass in Rotterdam and make Operation Heist a reality. (978)

Adv. Flight done. Laser next. But wait, we don’t have aluminum! Oops. No jet fighters for the time being. Not that we need them. (982)

Groningen needs to rebuild its granary. Perhaps we should have sent a spy to Native American before the war, to make a Counter-Espionage operation. Lesson learned. (984)

More bombing and artillery before we send in the melee units to collect more xp. (990)

Suleiman wants to get in on the action, but who is he going to hit? (991)

I hate it when you cancel a 20 gpt-for-cow trade in the hopes of increasing the price, but the civ’s surplus plummets to zero. Then you can’t trade, so you can go from +20-something gpt to -20 gpt instantly. That’s a 40+ gpt swing! (994)

It’s not a big priority, but aluminum is north of Operation Heist’s target city. (997)

The vassal to a master wants me to stop all trade with his master. It must take a pretty ticked off vassal for that to happen! (998)

Bombers only, no arty. We have 3 melee units close to level 6, so it doesn’t matter if we lose 1 or even 2 of them. Winning at 91% odds nets at least 2 xp, which is more than the 1 xp we’d get fighting at 99% odds. (1001)

Rotterdam rebuilds a sabotaged forge. We don’t need medics as much as we need tanks right now, but Rotterdam will produce medically-inclined units soon. (1006)

Khoisan’s airport spits out more airborne fury, which is compounded by an artillery barrage. (1007)

Interesting: our nearly-dead maceman is 3 xp away from level 6 and has a nearly 50% chance of winning a fight against a decimated defender. Well, we have 2 swordsmen with almost as much xp, so why not take the gamble and get WP a turn early? (1009)

The maceman wins! We can’t promote the maceman till next turn, so he needs to survive this turn. So we make sure his escorts stay put. (1010)

Folks, I'm going to take a break from updating to allow photobucket to reset the bandwidth allowance for my account. Believe it or not, my photobucket account has logged over 22 GB of traffic in 2 weeks! I've already uploaded a ton of stuff for the next few turns, so I don't feel like re-uploading them onto a second account....

Thanks for the support. I'll be back on Nov. 13!

oh wow! I was pretty confident that it would be able to support whatever you needed too . well looking forward to seeing the conclusion. I'm not sure if he needs to be promoted first, but once you get a level 6 troop, it doesnt matter if he dies, you'll still qualify for west point (at least according to kmad).

23 GB used up from Oct. 13 to today = 2 GB left from Nov. 3 to 13 = ouch! I refuse to downgrade the jpg quality and would rather wait for the bandwidth reset.

Yes but a troop that is sitting on 26 xp with 4 promotions is still level 5. You have to actually promote it to level 6. Same with Heroic Epic; if you never promote a unit that has gotten to 10 xp, that unit is still considered level 1.

I just finished reading, great game :goodjob:

    Correct.
I just wonder how it has taken you so long to get the unit to unlock the West point. A short war against Wang Kon perhaps had given you the xp to build well-promoted units out of the gate...

Inca got the nod because we were getting hit EXTREMELY hard by NAmerican culture, and Eiffel and the other Wonders were too good to pass up. Also, Wang Kon was already warring with someone else, and we didn't want to push them over the edge; in a way, Korea made us confident that nobody would attack from the east, thereby allowing us to concentrate almost all of our forces in the west.

I'm unsure if a short war would have produced a WP, because we would need to keep hitting redlined units with the same unit, and unless we milk a city, that means just +1 xp per city. Korea doesn't have very many cities...

I'm not that sure about all the wars and stuff in your game, some time has passed since I read it. IIRC, Ragnar DoW on Wang Kon before you started your war with Inca. Ragnar even asked you to join his war. This would've given you some diplomatic bonusses with him (Mutual military struggle) and you easily could've razed some of Kons minor cities. If you wouldn't have gotten the xp you needed, oh well, but it was worth a try.
After the war, with no unit enough experienced, you could've used a GG to get the lvl 6 unit.

    Just what I would've done ;)

Ah, I don't always follow conventional wisdom, if that was it. :) I also wrote an entire entry about Risk-like behavior and why I would rather let Ragnar and Wang Kon fight each other in that side of the Dutch empire, while we took over the rest of the world on the other side.

“Argh I hate how the AI gets those production and research advantages and stuff!” Sitting Bull pouts as his cities fall, one by one.

“Uh sir, we get the advantages. We’re playing on Warlord difficulty. Also, have you ever gotten the feeling that maybe, in a parallel dimension, we are an AI civ and the Dutch are controlled by a human?” Geronimo replies.

“Can we have this, um, philosophical question, some other time?”

    ******************************************

    Spoiler :

Nukes? Maybe we need to mark all the uranium in the world for destruction, too. (1011)

Since just about everyone has Rocketry now, we might as well trade it away for Mil Tradition so that we can build West Point next turn. (1013)

Rotterdam spawns a Great Prophet. (1016)

Our maceman levels up and Middelburg begins construction of West Point, unfortunately without stone. Our bombers sweep in and help the artillery soften up Spiro’s defenders, allowing our tanks to mop up easily, and another GG emerges to settle in Middelburg. Operation Hopper is a success! (1033-34, 36, 37)

Meanwhile, our forces that had taken Chaco Canyon have had reinforcements come to guard Chaco Canyon while the bulk of the army pushes on to Cahokia. Aircraft and artillery make short work of the cultural defenses. A long artillery barrage decimates the defenders, though one artillery division succumbs to the enemy. The tanks then take over, but there are so many defenders that we are unable to capture the city this turn with enough spare units to form a good garrison. (1029, 31-32)

Since Shrineless Christianity is not a major religion and we don’t want to spend tons of hammers and turns on missionaries anyway, the Great Prophet goes to Amsterdam to settle. (1039)

Laser done, Composites next, as Fission doesn’t give us anything immediately useful, and the other options are worse (Computers obsoletes Spiral among other things; Fiber Optics takes away Kremlin; and Mass Media gives us nothing useful, as previously explained). (1043)

Since we don’t intend to allow anyone else to build modern armor, anti-tank units become supermen. They almost never defend against anything other than tanks, which they excel at countering. So we make a few of them to act as medics, in our Red Cross city. (1044)

Operation Zeus resumes, with more air strikes, artillery strikes, and tank rushes. A pair of reinforcement tank divisions approach to reinforce our damaged besieging army. (1045, 49)

We have some spare bombers on the Operation Hopper front, so they go bomb some ships that Sitting Bull has sent to Khoisan. Our reinforcement ships from our shipyards in Amsterdam, The Hague, and the Moai/IW city make short work of the interlopers. Our transports continue to pick off weaker ships in order to gain extra movement points. (1052, 54-55)

Operation Hopper has been a success in capturing Spiro, so it has been extended by adding two more objectives in Operation Hopper 2 and 3. By the way, ignore the Native American destroyer builds. Sitting Bull momentarily had oil, but we bombed it, as usual (I’ve omitted almost all of the screenshots of our bombing the enemy oil field, as it got redundant), right after the well became operational. This also explains how Bull managed to have a destroyer; he must have taken advantage of that split second of oil to upgrade a ship before we could re-pillage the oil. (1056)

    Spoiler :

The Dutch navy is blockading much of Sitting Bull’s northern shoreline, but one enemy ship slips through to bombard Maastricht. Our battleship quickly annihilates the frigate raider. (1059)

More airstrikes and artillery precede our final push into Cahokia. We lose an artillery division to an enemy cannon division, but the two reinforcement tank divisions arrive to protect the artillery left outside the city gates, while the rest of the tanks flow into Cahokia and capture the Temple of Zeus. Operation Zeus is successful! (1060-62)

Meanwhile, we have massed enough forces to begin Operation Heist. Without the massive air support that our other operations enjoyed, we lose an artillery division at a time when we already have significant War Weariness problems thanks to the Temple of Zeus’s effects before we were able to capture that wonder. So we switch to Police State, which completely eliminates war weariness when combined with Jails and Mount Rushmore. (1063, 66, 69, 72)

We did not have the firepower to complete Operation Heist on the same turn that we bombarded its defenses, but the next turn, we send in the tanks. (1077)

Creative Construction, Holy Shrine of the biggest religion on the planet (Judaism), and a Military Academy to boot! (1080)

Operation Hopper 2 is underway. Our invading fleet drops off a bunch of troops and bombards the enemy city as well. (1082)

Now that Operation Zeus, Hopper (phase 1), and Heist have all succeeded, it’s time to map routes to new objectives:

OPERATION HOPPER (PHASE 2 and 3): We’ll continue to climb that west coast by dropping off units via transports.

OPERATION GRAND SLAM: The ZEUS task force and its reinforcements will heal and then press south before making a U-turn and marching back up north, capturing four cities in all, and ending with the capture of the city near the enemy oil well.

OPERATION METALLICA: The HEIST task force will heal and then target the aluminum-rich mines of eastern Native America before wiping out resistance south of Middelburg.

    (1083)

Saboteurs strike Rotterdam’s Jewish temple. How ironic, given that they were probably Jewish Native American spies. Oh well, once Operation Metallica is done, we won’t ever have to worry about Native American culture stealing tiles from Rotterdam again. Also, an enemy cavalry charge near the enemy city of Jute fails to dislodge our army camped outside that city. (1084)

Jute falls beneath a hail of bombs and artillery shells and tank fire. (1108-09)

    Ragnar finishes Apollo. (1110)

Naturally, we vote for ourselves in the AP vote. (1115)

We pick off the stray cavalry with our border defenders. (1116)

Bull briefly has oil before we pillage it; during that split second, he upgrades a ship to a destroyer, which our battleship promptly sinks. We also win the AP vote easily. I thought Suleiman had a Hindu city, but I guess not; way back in the day we should have paid a few gold to infect him with Hinduism. Argh! (1120)

By the way, Judaism is still the no. 1 religion by a big margin. West Point done. (1121)

“Ragnar and Suleiman have both completed their Apollo projects,” Chris begins as he, Maarten, Ilse, and Willem sit around the war room table in Amsterdam Palace.

“How long before they finish?” Maarten asks.

“It’s hard to say, but if left unmolested, they could probably get there in another hundred years or so.”

“They’ll be gone by then,” Maarten grins, with a crazy gleam in his eyes. “For the first time in history, the Dutch military power is rated higher than that of the Vikings.”

The others around the table gasp.

“And this is despite the occasional loss that we’ve taken in our ultimately successful operations. Everybody knows that we have met most of our objectives, though admittedly, Operation Heist was a little slow to start,” Maarten continues. “But we’ve got Sitting Bull right where we want him, and we have a large buildup of forces near the Korean border to make Ragnar think twice about attacking us.”

“What about the rumors of an Ottoman invasion?” Willem asks.

“We have some submarines and destroyers prowling the Orange Ocean, and we can’t figure out which way Suleiman is going. But given that our military dwarfs his, he probably isn’t aiming for us.”

    *************************************

    Spoiler :

Mesa Verde, the first leg of Operation Grand Slam, falls without incident. (1122-23)

    Composites done. Stealth soon. (1125)

    Suleiman finishes Apollo. (1128)

Operation Hopper, phase 2 was a resounding success. Some of the artillery there was upgraded to Mobile Artillery, making phase 3 even easier. The bombers lead the way, as usual. (1129, 32)

We get a promo for Trompest. Attacking pre-oil/Combustion ships with transports is hilarious for the side with oil/Combustion. (1133)

Our gigantic production capacity, powered by 3GD, factories, industrial parks, dikes, forges, Organized Religion, HE/Mil Acad/WP, drydocks, railroads, a golden age, etc. has finally pumped out enough units to dethrone Ragnar in the power charts. (1135)

Such a powerful military allows us to reject any proposal that we don’t like, such as this one by Suleiman. Also, Suleiman’s hands were full a few turns ago, so he was either going to attack us or not. So rejecting his demand won’t change this target, anyway. (1138)

Operation Grand Slam makes the U-turn and keeps pushing north. This frees up many southern troops, which had been in the southern cities to thwart counterattacks and revolts. Vast areas of land are opened up once the last of the southern Native American cities goes down. (1140, 42)

Bull sends a cavalry division and an infantry division onto a hill in our territory. We respond with air strikes and tanks to wipe out his pathetic attempt to counterattack. (1145)

We settle our latest GG in Middelburg. (1146)

For the first time in the war, all four of our fighters fail to destroy the enemy oil well! I guess Bull will have at least one turn of unimpeded oil flow during this war, after all! (1148)

Operation Metallica’s task force has reached its first target. Paratroops jump in to reinforce the attackers. Also, new units from the southern cities and Rotterdam will swing north via railroad and attack the northeastern enemy city from the east; maybe they will even beat Operation Metallica’s main task force there! (1152-53)

Middelburg’s forge is sabotaged, forcing us to rebuild it. (1155)

Operation Metallica stalls as, without air and artillery, the tanks alone can’t easily take the city. (1156)

The enemy oil survived four fighters’ pillage attempts last turn. It does not repeat that feat this turn. (1157)

Men, this is going to be a hard fight. Nice going so far. Keep pushing but you are nowhere near a domination win yet if you ask me. But once the snowball gets rolling you will be mopping up a lot of cities. Keep it coming.

A raging wind tosses the ships of the Northern Dutch Fleet as they near Etowah, icy island and last stronghold of the Native Americans, who have fled to what was supposed to be a reservation for Scythian refugees.

“Sir, a message from the island. Sitting Bull wants to discuss a peace treaty,” a sailor salutes as he enters the communication room.

    “Put him through.”

    “Yes sir.”

    ***BZZT***

    “Admiral Cornelius Tromp, speaking.”

“This is Sitting Bull, acting general of the Native Americans. Since you killed all of my generals and admirals.”

    “Yes, that was most unfortunate.”

“I’m willing to discuss a peace treaty.”

“I’m afraid that is not possible.”

“What? Are you barbaric palefaces going to commit genocide? That will net you a diplomatic penalty in Master of Orion!”

“Luckily for us, we’re all part of the human race, plus many of your people continue to live and thrive in territories that we just liberated, so there is no genocide going on here. Plus this isn’t Master of Orion.”

“Darn.” (Muffled sounds of talking in the background.)

    “Say, who is that?”

    “King Fenius Farsa, Scythian refugee.”

“Farsa?! Didn’t you disappear eons ago?”

“It wasn’t eons ago, just a thousand years or two,” Farsa sniffs.

“This is explains why we were never able to pin the airport, granary, and other terrorist acts on Native America as easily as we thought. But we did know that Sitting Bull was funding the terrorists.”

“We only wanted our rightful Scythian peninsula back!” Fenius exclaims.

“Well, you made a deal with the devil. Sitting Bull threatened The Netherlands three separate times for increasing volumes of gold. My father, Maarten Tromp, was apoplectic, but for a long time we could not afford a two-front war and let you scum off the hook. No longer. No longer!”

“Cornelius.. may I call you Neil? Neil. You seem like a reasonable man,” Sitting Bull begins. “I have some of that gold that I, uh, requested and liberated from Dutch coffers. It’s sitting right here, waiting for the right man to send a boat out so I can escape.”

“Terrorism, extortion, and now attempted bribery? I’ve heard enough,” Cornelius replies.

“This is all your fault, Bull!” Fenius cries. “You promised me land to call our own and protection in exchange for our services! And yet you do nothing to protect us from the Dutch onslaught, and the remnants of your empire seek refuge on what was supposed to be our reservation here on Etowah!”

“I will leave you two to discuss the ironies of that situation, as well as the irony of Sitting Bull being the one to set up reservations for others. Our warships are about to unload armor and artillery, and your precious island will be converted into a Dutch naval base. Bye now!” Cornelius says cheerfully as the opening salvos begin from the booming Dutch warships.

“Wait, wait, what will happen to us?” Sitting Bull asks, but Cornelius cuts the radio transmission.

    ***Bzzp.***

“We’re what’s going to happen to you,” an unfamiliar voice responds. A dark-haired, lanky man with an amused expression and wearing a sharp tuxedo, and his accomplice, an Incan in combat fatigues, enter the room in the lighthouse, where Sitting Bull and Fenius have taken refuge.

    “How did you get in?”

“Your underlings surrendered to our special forces assault groups without our having to fire a single shot. You’re finished, Bull and Fenius. For your crimes against humanity, including mass terrorist acts of war, extortion, and inhumane treatment of Hindus who lived under your Jewish rule, you are both hereby under arrest,” Jan replies.

“Never!” Bull sneers as he leaps out the window, followed by Fenius. When Jan and Eleven Feathers (who walks with a limp but has recovered from his injuries in the Incan military sufficiently to get out of a wheelchair) look down, they see nothing but storm-tossed waves.

“What a way to go!” Eleven Feathers says.

    ********************************************

    Spoiler :

It’s difficult to figure out Suleiman’s target since his transports are still loitering at home. (1159)

To assist our spies in lighting up Ragnar and Suleiman’s cities so that we don’t have to get really close to look inside their cities, we weight them at 2 and everyone else at 1. (1160)

One day, one of our medic units with Woody I is going to get all the way to Woody III and be a mega healer, since medic and woodsman healing bonuses stack when they are on the same unit. (1163)

We have not given our vassal Incans any oil, but the Sumerians look like they’re talking it over. Earlier we were going to bribe Capac to turn Hindu and then to get Mil Trad but he was pretty teched up, so we didn’t do it because we didn’t want him to turn around and trade away even more techs. (1164)

    Operation Metallica secures Aluminum. (1165-66)

Our cities are cranking out so many troops that the new ones form a might task force to get to Operation Metallica’s final destination even faster than the original task force! However, the newer units don’t have enough air and artillery support to take the city this turn without risking losses. (1170)

Operations Hopper and Grand Slam near completion. (1171-77)

Our mobile artillery has caught up with the tanks, and after a hail of bullets from the fighters in Maastricht and a huge artillery barrage, Operation Metallica draws to a conclusion as Moundville falls. We reject Bull’s pleas, as there is no civ with a larger army than we have, so it’s very unlikely that anyone will step in and rescue Bull from his fate. (1181, 85)

The last Native American city is on the small, icy island of Etowah. Some Operation Hopper ships blow away its cultural defenses, but the amphibious penalty is large, so we unload a small strike force and wait a turn. (1187)

Stealth done. Fission next. No real reason why, except that Fiber Optics obsoletes Kremlin, and we aren’t done rush-buying and upgrading units yet. (1190)

Air strikes against Bull’s last four Infantry divisions. Then mobile artillery does its thing and the tanks perform the coup de grace. (1196) Native America is forevermore GONE. No more wanting to rejoin the motherland unhappiness in the ex-NAmerican cities!

Ragnar’s economy has righted itself, and the Viking military is growing again. (1197)

Now that the Native Americans are done for, it's like a Clam(Cold) War between you and Ragnar. has ragnar gotten industrialism and factories yet? good update :). also, I would have switched my espionage off of huayna and Native America. you have so many EPs on them that they wont catch up with you at any point in the game and those 120 Eps are better spent on your real threats

Thanks guys, I'm going to post sometime after Dec. 12, when my photobucket resets. I kinda rushed through the Native American war just to try to get those bandwidth-intensive images out of the way, but who knew that I'd run out of bandwidth after less than 2 weeks (Nov. 13 to 25)? Ack!
