It may not be obvious from the s/s but I think Native America might be going for a cultural victory, as their culture is incredibly strong, much stronger than expected. In which case, they get to die next. No point in building too much more EP against Inca as they will die soon anyway.

Also, folks, the high-quality images mean that the bandwidth has been exceeded for my account... not sure what I'm going to do. Maybe use a flickr account for the remainder of the thread? Does anyone have any suggestions on another place to host large volumes of images?

Our massing army near Nijmegen won't let it fall into enemy hands, I swear! :) Welcome to the thread!

How do the Incans and the Native Americans feel toward each other? You might have to face them both at the same time if you are not careful.

I have a feeling that they dislike each other due to the whole differing religions and the NA's disdain towards the hindu holy hug lol

They don't really like each other due to religious differences, but just in case of a sneak attack by Sitting Bull, Maastricht and Middelburg (the two cities in the northwest corner of The Netherlands) will have decently-sized garrisons. We'll also check everybody's hands every turn so we can prepare against surprise attacks!

Sorry guys I was out of town these past several days, I've actually already written up some of the next update, but I need to find another photo host, probably flickr?

Willem settles into the bathhouse at the Apostolic Palace yet again, but this time only Huayna is there.

    “Hello Willem! Thanks for coming!”

“Hi Huayna. So what’s this all about?”

“Have you considered adopting Hereditary Rule? It will bring our two civilizations even closer together.”

“You must learn to respect our differences.”

“I was so pleased with you before that I would have given you the Hindu Hug! But now I feel wary of you. Cautious, even.”

“Can we talk about more important things, Huayna?” Willem says with exasperation. “Our nations are under grave threat. Surely you have noticed the massive armies of our rival continent of Buddhaland? They have started off by attacking Wang Kon, but I’m afraid that it is only a matter of time before they set their eyes on our lands.”

“Are you proposing war with the infidels, then?”

“I’m proposing a Hindu unification. The Dutch and Incan people united will never be defeated!”

“That sounds like a hackneyed phrase so overused that current users of the phrase might not even know its origins.”

“I’m serious! Huayna, we’re talking about the fate of Colossia here!”

“Very well then. I accept your voluntary vassalage into the Incan Empire. I’ll have my people talk to your people tomorrow morning. We can even reuse the paperwork we used when we set up the American colonies!”

    “What?!” Willem exclaims.

“You’re offering vassalage to Inca, right?”

“Sort of, except that the Dutch Empire would govern the alliance. Inca would be the vassal, and the Americans as well, if that’s what it takes to unite us.”

Huayna looks indignant in his reply. “Never!”

    “Very well, then Huayna.”

“Are you declaring war on us?!”

    “No.”

“Oh, okay, for a moment there, I thought that massive army that you’re assembling near Cori was for us. Obviously it’s for someone else, like the Native Americans.”

    “Er, yes.”

“You know, I think they are going for a cultural victory.”

“I thought so too, but we can't be sure. All that I can say is that their culture is seducing the weak-minded among the Dutch, who are joining the Native Americans by the thousands.”

“That’s awful! Have your people talk to my people in the morning about a possible joint invasion to stop them!”

“Sure, right after we take care of some other business.”

“I thought you said you weren’t going to attack me.”

“That’s not quite what I said,” Willem grins.

“Don’t attack us, or we’ll rock your world.”

    “Yeah right.”

“I mean literally. We just built Rock N Roll.”

“Oh. Can I cancel our iron-for-ivory-and-gold deal?”

“Not for a while; you just renegotiated it, and you can’t renegotiate until 50 years pass.”

“Rats. You’re going to steal Eiffel Tower from us, aren’t you?”

    “Of course!”

“You know that this means that Inca will be even more tempting for would-be invaders, right?”

    “Doh!”

    ***

“Chris, I’m having some trouble understanding exactly who we are.”

“You’re Willem van Oranje of the Dutch.”

“I know, but apparently we know fascism now and have some new hotshot general settled in Middelburg because of it. Does this have anything to do with the massive industrialization taking place in the Netherlands?”

“Sort of. Assembly lines, fascism, it’s all the same, you know?”

    “I see.”

“Also, good news, Comrade. Our Long Island outposts have finally built a road to the horse pasture there, and we are now training horse-mounted, heavily armored, lance- and sword-wielding healers.”

“I guess that’s good, but why did we wait till now? And why such strong units and not something weaker like chariots?”

“Well, mounted units make hideously poor defenders most of the time due to their not being able to take cover in rough terrain and among city fortifications, and thus they tend to stay in the rear when under attack. We want our medics to be the last defenders if their army group is attacked, so that they can survive and heal the other survivors. As for why knights and not chariots, well, we know horseback riding, so that for some inexplicable reason prevents us from building chariots.”

“Very well. Any news from Maarten?”

“He wants a ton of cannons and for us to research artillery so that we can upgrade them all on the eve of invasion.”

    *RING RING*

Willem picks up the phone. “Hello?”

“Willem. It can no longer be tolerated. We demand that you cancel your deals with the vile Native Americans!,” Ragnar growls over the phone.

“You’re right; we can’t stand them either!”

“On behalf of the Viking people, I thank you!”

“Cool, bye now, before you threaten me with more stuff. Thanks for the 50 years of guaranteed peace, though.” Willem hangs up and grins at Chris.

“Good job, sir,” Chris grins back. “Although we lost some lucrative trades and can’t strike from Native American soil to attack Inca, that’s a lot of peace. Now we can leave our coastline relatively unguarded and stiffen our western front in case Sitting Bull attacks us.”

“Exactly. Anyway, Ilse and I are going to the grand reopening of the renowned Amsterdam theater now.”

    “What’s playing?”

“A play by a prolific hometown playwright who has written a long series of exceptionally popular plays. I hear that it’s bringing extra revenue into our city!”

To reduce unnecessary image bandwidth usage, images/gamespeak will be behind SPOILER tags from now on:

    Spoiler :

    Factories now. Health later. (575)

War is imminent, but so is unhealthiness once those factories come alive. The screen may say artillery now, but ignore that; we are going to switch to fridge for supermarkets. Supermarkets are extra-awesome because they also give +1 food, which is like half a specialist. (577)

The pair of workers on Long Island finally got around to building a road through that horse tile up there. The first Dutch horsemen show up in 1735. Haha. (578)

Naturally we settle the free GG from Fascism in the HE/future WP city. (579)

We already have the manufacturing lead, so once our cities are done making factories and the prod cities go back to making troops, the power graph will look much different. As long as we have enough troops to not be the weakest-looking civ, we’ll continue to develop our economy first so as to be able to sustain a prolonged series of wars without any problems. No reloads, no risks. We aren’t going for anything fancy, just utter domination once we have an industrialized base. (580)

That is, if we survive that long! (581)

Have you considered asking reasonable requests for once? (587-88)

A long time ago, Middelburg built stables to train some war elephants. Now, we shall use those stables to crank out healer-knights. They ought to be chariots so that they will be targeted last in a stack, but we can’t build chariots now that we have Horseback Riding. (589)

Fridge done. Let’s go for arty so we can fast-upgrade cannons so that the knights and arty should be done and in the south of the Netherlands in several more turns, at which point we can figure out whom we want to attack first. (591)

Are you f’in kidding me? Ragnar is about to DoW on someone and if that someone were us, we can block it for at least 10 turns by agreeing to stop trading with that jerk Sitting Bull, who extorted 720 gold from us in his last extortion job alone! Not that Ragnar would have DoW on us anyway, in all likelihood, given that Inca, Sumer, and Native America are all closer to him, and we are apparently not his Worst Enemy anyway. (593-94)

What the?? Inca stole Rock n Roll from us. (595)

Inca has really prioritized the Mass Media route, huh? (597)

I don’t know what I was smoking, but earlier, I renewed the iron deal with Huayna for Hit Singles and gold instead of taking iron away from his Eiffel efforts. (598)

Evidence that our spy-spamming, security bureaus, and EP buildup are working against the vile Koreans! Also we don’t need culture in Amsterdam, which is already going to be Legendary anyway; we take the gold instead. (601-02)

can't wait for war to start. I always love looking at the production graph after I industrialize before the civs. doing it during a golden age is even sicker.

“Comrade Willem, congratulations on building the Cristo Redentor and having the communist revolution,” Maarten says as he strolls into the Amsterdam Palace’s war room. “Hello, Ilse. Chris.”

    “Hello,” Chris and Ilse reply.

“Thanks, Maarten, have a seat,” Willem says. “What’s the news?”

“The Vikings have declared war on the Native Americans!”

“They had it coming! Haha! Two of our biggest rivals at each others’ throats, I love it.” Willem smiles.

“The only problem is that Ragnar’s army dwarfs Sitting Bull’s army.”

“Uh oh, is there any way we can help Bull out without actually getting in the crossfire?” Willem asks.

“Bull has gotten over our trade cancellation. We can trade with Native America again,” Chris interjects. “Should we do it to help them out a bit?”

    “Yes,” Willem replies.

“But Willem, trading gold with Bull will just make his culture stronger, and some of our cities, like Maastricht, are already besieged with culture,” Ilse says.

“That’s okay, Ilse,” Willem says, stroking his beard. “No matter what, we have to get that oppressive Native American culture off our backs, which means a war. Refusing to trade gold to them will only delay the inevitable showdown. Besides, Colossia needs to be united. Hindus need to be united.”

“Very well. I’ll have Rotterdam build Mount Rushmore as well, to fight back against Native American culture and to help with wartime unrest,” Ilse says.

“Why not attack Korea after Inca?” Chris asks.

“If you paid more attention to things outside of the laboratory, you’d know that Korea is already weak and militarily backwards,” Maarten responds. “Korea is not an immediate threat, especially after our espionage funding went through the roof and really clamped down on Korea’s sabotage attempts.”

“To make matters worse, Inca just stole the Eiffel Tower from us. Nijmegen and other cities were counting on the Tower to help hold back the Native American culture. If we can capture the Eiffel Tower, it would not be enough to reclaim our lost lands quickly,” Ilse adds.

    *RING RING*

Willem picks up the phone. “Hello? Oh, hello Mehmed. You’re heading the Ottoman Empire’s overseas colonies now, you say? Good for you! Uh huh. Yes. Okay. Bye.” Willem hangs up the phone. “Stupid colonies,” he mutters. “Maarten?”

    “Yes sir?”

“Have our army positioned to strike at Inca immediately. Send word back here when you are ready.”

    “Yes sir.”

    “Chris?

    “Yes?”

“Have Utrecht build some airships to assist in the invasion. Rebase them at Nijmegen.”

    “Yes sir.”

    “Ilse?”

    “Yes, Willem?”

“How did 001’s son get my number? And how did he learn about what really happened to his father?”

    Ilse blushes.

“I’ll be seeing you in private, later,” Willem says. “Everyone else here knows his orders. Dismissed!”

    ************************************

    Spoiler :

Moai/Ironworks city gets to build the Eiffel tower. I didn’t realize that he was Eiffel-capable. I could not cancel the iron deal since it was too soon after the last iron trade. No matter, we are probably going to wind up invading Inca for Cuzco’s huge cache of wonders, anyway. (605)

A push towards Three Gorges Dam gets started by Industrialism. (608)

Praise the Lord! We sacrifice a bit of beakers per turn to save some maintenance per turn and to get a significant boost in production via State Property. (612-14)

Sucks to be you, Bull. You’re getting your karmic just deserts after those many times that you’ve demanded tribute from us. (615)

It is rather unfortunate that Wang Kon and Suleiman have declared peace, but oh well. It’s nice to see Ragnar taking a hit in the power graph; the Protective Native Americans ought to be able to fight Ragnar to a standstill unless Ragnar really focuses his efforts. (618)

Sitting Bull is willing to talk to us again after we closed trade with him at Ragnar’s request several turns ago. We trade for wine as we are running into health problems. The gold for gold per turn is a fair trade, considering that Sitting Bull is going to need all the help he can get to hold off Ragnar. (620-21)

Korea is still a militarily backwards nation, and the death and blockading and pillaging that Suleiman brought to Wang Kon’s shores probably didn’t help. (622)

Ottoman colonist Mehmed II shows up. He doesn’t like us for our religion and such, so we can’t even Open Borders with him. (624)

Gilgamesh is far away and not a big threat to do much of anything against us right now, especially since we still have closed borders with Sitting Bull, so why not give him some nice resources in exchange for gold per turn? (625)

Native American culture is painful. Rotterdam is fighting for its corn-fed life and even a Synagogue doesn’t slow down the Native American advance. Strangely, Korea still ranks as our biggest cultural victory rival according to the Victory Conditions screen; maybe they’re also going for a cultural victory just like the Native Americans are? Or is the Creative Constructions corporation really so powerful that it’s pushing us really hard, even though the Native Americans are not going for a cultural victory? Rushmore’s effects are nice, but that culture is even nice for Rotterdam’s sake. (629-30)

Industrialism done. Going for Combustion for tanks and modern-era ships, now. (632)

Capac steals Eiffel. That settles it. Inca gets to be our target, with Cuzco the big prize. The Hague is our lone shipyard right now; it made a frigate and is now making some ironclads to protect our coastal resources against retaliatory pillaging. (633)

Moai City must get Pentagon in time; the AIs have been slow to go down the Steam Power road to Fascism, but who knows, someone might tech to it and use a GE to steal it or something. Losing Eiffel is one thing; we can capture that with troops. Losing Pentagon sucks because it means fighting using relatively weaker troops against buffer troops built by the Pentagon-builder. (634)

We have major troop concentrations in the northwest (to guard against Sitting Bull), in the southwest to guard against Inca and also to suppress revolts, and in the southeast to suppress revolts and also because for a while it looked like we were going to hit Korea first. We shift most of the anti-Korean troops west to meet up with the troops in Nijmegen and Rotterdam. (637)

“Willem. We urgently request mighty Netherlands’s assistance in our crusade against the Native Americans!”

“Very funny, Ragnar,” Willem responds. “Your army is as big as everyone else’s put together, and you’re asking us for help? Plus, you are already in a war so you are extremely unlikely to declare war on us if we turn down your request.”

    “It was worth a shot!”

    “Bye!”

    ***

“What’s the word, Chris?” Willem asks as the two of them sit down in the Amsterdam Palace war room.

“Maarten’s ready. He has artillery now, thanks to upgrades. We have airships in Nijmegen which can strike into Incan territory. Also, Inca just build Mining Inc., but we can’t really use it.”

    “Why not?”

“We are in 3.02 and not 3.13 so corporation inflation is pretty icky.”

    “Huh?”

“Sorry, Willem, I lapsed into gamespeak there.”

    “I see.”

“Also, we have built a canal through the Scythian isthmus to save our ships the trip around the Korean peninsula. The Hague is a major shipyard at this time and is crafting frigates and ironclads to help thwart any sea-based Incan counterattacks.”

    “Good. Any other news?”

“Just that we are industrializing and are heading towards plastics to build a giant dam to power our continent’s factories.”

“Excellent! Give the order to Maarten to attack, then.”

    “It’s clobberin’ time!”

    **************************************

    Spoiler :

At the same time, we’re building some last-minute air support in Utrecht, which has run out of spies and workers to build and needs something to occupy its time. Also, we got a nice gold refund out of partially-building Eiffel. The refund will help to pay for some last-minute unit upgrades. (639)

Workers are starting to mass near that oil near Rotterdam to build a fort, so that we can start building tanks immediately after getting Combustion; the same workers can then convert the fort to an Oil Well. (In BtS, forts connect resources to the trade network but don’t give the bonus to the city like wells/mines/whatever do.) (640)

Other workers have completed a fort near Delft that lets ships pass through the Scythian isthmus rather than go around the Korean peninsula. This really helps the slow ironclads steaming out of The Hague. Note that we pack the lone transport ship in that stack, the Trompest in a Teapot II, with 3 machine guns and a knight-healer for use in special operations. (641)

Ragnar is doing a poor job of dealing lasting damage to Sitting Bull’s army; in fact, Bull has gotten stronger since the war began. (645)

We check everybody out prior to our declaring war on Capac; nobody is planning to declare war on anyone else, so it looks like we can rest easy knowing that Korea is weak and has many outdated units, Bull has his hands full with Ragnar, and nobody else looks like they are about to attack us. (648)

    Mass upgrade to artillery. (649)

Out of the blue, Suleiman cancels our deer-rice deal, perhaps because one of his colonies got rice. We trade him other stuff to get the deer back. (652)

Not a chance, not on the eve of war with Inca. (653)

Combustion done. Finally we have the techs necessary to link up to Plastics and Three Gorges Dam. (655)

Too bad that this is 3.02 where corporate inflation is out of control, else Mining Inc might work better than State Property. Oh well. (657)

Dutch DoW (Declaration of War) against Inca. The outdated units serve to sponge up some collateral damage should the enemy attack our stack with siege weapons. (660)
