Immortal University 89 - De Gaulle

@shulgi

Spoiler :
I just left him alone until I hit construction and machinery, then peace vassaled him. Might have been better to choke him.

@TMIT: I agree, I felt my last couple maps were too easy and a challenge needed to present itself. Hope everybody is having fun with a different style of play than they are probably used too. I'll try to get this map done myself in the next day or so.

Hard maps (either naturally or minor alterations) are semi-traditional for IU, ie TMIT added in a minor civ on one iirc, I gave the AIs deity starting techs and units on a map that had nice land for us to make it more challenging one time. I also generally rerolled any start i thought was too good from what i could see before any movement, thou I used afew good starts just for variation :)

Ok, thanks for the info.

I'm just a cruel person :D. All of my maps in each of the main series had a little extra something in them. Sometimes I would even do hidden things like flip AI start locations so you'd get sandwiched by religion founders, and then use rivers for an early trade network...generally not mentioning such things ;).

A lot of times though I also coughed up true random maps so that I could play it blind too.

Immortal/Normal Domination

Spoiler :

So, as I said in my last update, spammed cities to new world of mids/glib wonders allowing me to lib astro and get it 1st. Beeline with 2 golden ages and a lot of tech brokering for gold got me communism ASAP and let me set up there with rep/nationhood/caste/SP/OR. Cities built granary/forge consistently. I shipped/built a ton of workers, too.

I had designs on using this ridiculous land advantage for space, but no dice; Pacal started picking up the culture pace, forcing me to attack him. Vassal AI of justinian just didn't like me enough for UN, so warpath it was...

Pacal capped very quickly after I took Mutal, despite retaking the city I took en route. AI going for culture will drop culture plans if you take/hold their capitol though, and so I was able to cap him despite him getting a 3rd city ~26k still (that city finished with 36k when I won)

I built a LOT of units in this, as you will see in the final screenshot. Arty initiate on cities, Infantry are standard attack troops. SAM infantry with 5 xp can get to 70% interception rate; I shot down a surprising number of fighters/bombers...however SAM also double as anti-gunship which mattered after the first few wars. Anti-tanks help in stack d vs tanks and scare AI tanks from attacking the stack. This is basically an end-game attack force.

However, my kills:deaths weren't ideal in this game. This is largely because I underestimated the sheer #forces that super justinian + capvassals england/germany could put forth. The new world war machine nevertheless threw down enough nonsense to overpower him, though cities I took and garrisoned with 10+ units around his capitol weren't safe! Unfortunately for him, I was shipping 40+ units at a time from new world in waves and was taking cities all over the place, and my base home army was 150+ strong so I retook the cities and wore his stacks down as he could reinforce less each time. He eventually capped.

The game ended before I could cap england/germany. England "feared my enemies" (retardation....you'd rather die to someone 5x as powerful?!) and then PEACEVASSAL'D to Germany. A bit miffed, I easily captured cities desptie seeing mechinf at this point but tripped dom.

Optimized play would be to just tech ASAP and kill Justinian, but that's actually harder than how I played and it kind of ruins the fun of Terra :P. The production over there was obviously key to the end game wars.

@shulgi

Spoiler :
Are people successfully choking Justinian or being peaceful?

Depends on what you call choke. In my game I settled in his face and stole a worker then got peace and this caused a second early construction war when he DOW'd after getting ready. I got peace shortly after fending off his stack and sharing his religion then he was actually pleased.

I waited for rifles and then smooshed him. I'm not sure if you'd call that a "choke" or not but it worked for me.

1670 AD

Spoiler :
well, tmit beat me to it (i play relatively slowly), but basically we had the exact same strategy. its 1670 atm, i have 34 cities, and I have just built granaries / forges / factories / barracks. teching artillery and building my infantry.

TMIT:

Spoiler :
What was your approach to worker organization in the new world in this particular situation? Like you, I sent over a ton of workers, but at one point I just got bogged down in micromanaging all of them efficiently. At what point, if any, did you turn your workers on full automation, or networking?

After settling about 10 new world cities I had a ton of workers over there and was building more. To get them to shop spam, I used "emphasize hammers" and just went full auto. I chopped trees I wanted chopped manually and had them leave forests. Auto shop/watermill/lumbermill spam. Micro would be more efficient, but I just couldn't take it anymore.

I just wanted to say hello! This is where the hax players are hiding, right? However @klonoklown told me that he wants me to join this game. I have to play ongoing NC first. So the question is: Should I play this one or next IU match? I don't mind if there is not
Spoiler :
Justinian
in the map. I'll face him in NC. :) But I will visit here soon, don't laugh too much. Btw I just got my 1st noble lvl victory

I really miss your civ IV let's plays. Are you going to do any more of them?

Also, I did go direct tech and attack but still took me to 1860 to win, and had I not gotten the diplo victory (accident), it would have probably taken me at least another 5-6 turns to cap the final AI. Any thoughts on how much faster you feel the "optimized" path would have taken you?

Emp until 1400 AD

Spoiler :

So, with what was left of my army could either just take out Justininan and his 3 cities before he peace vassaled to someone or I could attack the english since Ragnar already dowed her. Even if Justinians culture is a pain, he is finished so I was in no hurry with him. So I turned to the english. Mostly cause she was very advanced so I gathered she had gold. But for some reason in this game nobody had feu...
Just after I declared on Elisabeth she got lib... at 860 AD. But she did not have feu or machinery.... Man, I saw a huge opportunity. She was also kind to build the mids and ToA in London. I didn't waste any time. After taking 1 city Ragnar made peace so I could take her 3 biggest cites and then cap her. What a catch. Very nice cites, nice wonders and she was way ahead in tech. I know I could have gifted her the cites back and let he win the game with rifles before anybody knew what fit them, but that would be boring.
Next up that stupid Monty attacked Ragbar who was twice his size. Ragnar had grown way to big already and I was really not looking forward to Monty vassaling to him....
So I took my army, my very outdated army, dowed Monty and followed Ragnar's huge stack. He got the 1st one, but he suidided a big portion of his army on Monty's stack in a city soon enough and I was there to mop up the rest. After me taking 4 cites and Ragnar 1 I was outside Monty's capitol. He didn't wanna cap before, but after that city also fell, he gave up. I gifted back Monty's cities and am planning to cuirs stomp everyone. After Pacal and Elisabeth capped I have totally controlled the tech pace in this game. Ragnar is no techer and had constantly been at war the entire game. Justinian is just too small after i took out his main cities. German has too poor land even if he had 10 cities half of them aren't very good. Monty never techs well.
This means nobody is even close to rifling yet and I can start pumping out Cuirs soon.
Key to the game is to choke Justinian bad so he can't rex like crazy in the beginning.

Yeah maybe, but you're all I've got, so I ask you. :D

Spoiler :

IMO this map will be a bit slower than average even for pros due to limited early :commerce:. Still, I expect someone like Rusten could put up ~1000 AD rifles and then stomp all over the map, finishing in the 1400's (if everything goes well) to 1600's (pretty easy).

Part of the reason I didn't go that route is that I felt my teching wasn't good enough. That, combined with me getting sistine neutering AI culture rate prompted me to go the new world settling route. Rarely have I had the new world cities matter quite so much, however. They were the vast majority of my war machine; Pacal even took 2 of my homeland cities using Justinian's rails! Justinian, however, did not break my hill choke because I had 20+ machine guns and a large number of infantry there. With 50% from hills + fortify machine guns are a serious problem for everything but future era type troops and Justinian just couldn't break through that as I attacked from 3 directions and held on the Viking front.

quoted, signed and vigorously reiterated :)

It's a good thing I'm getting going with videos again then :D. However, I'm doing a Dark Souls run first ;). 1st video is up as of this morning.

I will definitely do more civ IV at some point, however. Now, how to work in some HOMM V and finish FFT....

right now, I'm in the middle of your Boudica playthru... curious to see whether you'll be able to wing it. I've never been able to beat crap maps like that.

Gave up at 900AD emperor.

Spoiler :
Built tons of wonders in my capital (and I mean TONS) and settled all the great people that were generated. Settled 4 cities on the peninsula, and another 4 further north. Things were going OK and would only get better as my awesome capital snowballed my empire onwards.

Then Justantin declared on me and I had no army so I died. I tried reloading earlier saves but was unable to prevent the DoW. Sure I could go back even further but can't be bothered. If his religion had spread to me earlier, that probably would've done the trick, but it took AGES for that to happen.

1864 Domination:

Spoiler :
Aztecs simply would not capitulate and towards the end I had something ridiculous like 20+ war unhappiness, every city was at 8, but I had the armies, and I slogged it through. I didn't have enough ships to move them around effectively so thats something to work on. I thought it was in the bag and just got lazy.

thanks for the map
