High Elven ISB Capt & Ghost Agent
I have been toying around with the same Idea I did with Civ2. I plan to add and modify some Units and Techs in C3C to make it a real world feal.
I plan to devide each units into classes.
Army:
Melee Class (Attacking units with swords or maces)
Swordsmen -> Med Inf -> Infantry Class
Rocket Class (Defensive Anti-Tank units)
Bazokamen -> TOW Infintry
Spear Class (Defenders)
Spear -> Pike -> Upgrades to Infantry Class
Archer Class (Attackers)
Archer -> Crossbowmen (Longbowmen are the UU to the British) -> Upgrades to infantry Class
Infantry Class (Hybrid Defenders and Attackers)
Aquebuser(Renamed form of the Musketmen in Civ3) -> Grenidear (From the Napolean Scen in C3C) -> Riflemen -> Doughboy(Renamed form of the Infantry in Civ3) -> GI(Volksgrenidears (Germans) will be flavor units) -> Assault Infantry
Light Artillery Class (Fast moving artillery pieaces, requires Horses or Oil)
Ballista -> Horse Artillery -> Artillery -> Mobile Howitzer (Mobile on a Tank Chasis) -> Missile Artillery
Heavy Artillery Class (Slow moving Artillery pieaces)
Catapult -> Trebuchet -> Mortor Artillery -> Seage Gun -> Railroad Gun -> Howizter

Next is the tricky part the Tech tree. I plan to devide the Civ3 ages into eras.
here are the eras
Ancent -> Classical -> Medivel -> Gunpowder -> Enlightenment -> Industrial (World War I) -> Modern (World War II) -> Information
Anceant and Classical goes into the Anceant Age in Civ3
Medivel, Gunpowder and Enlightenment goes into the Middle Ages in Civ3
Industrial and Modern goes into the Industrial Age in Civ3
Information will go in Modern Age in Civ3
the eras will have a distinct effect, They all will be required to advance into the next age since the eras will also be techs in Civ3. There will also be few Non era techs that are also required to advance to the next age (Cannon Making along with the Enlightenment Era, Medivel era, and Gunpowder era are required to advance up)
